Week 35: LHS concert/chapel

Quick blog today:

**We thank Lutheran High St. Charles for their wonderful band concert on Tuesday and for leading chapel on Wednesday.  Chapel was led by Zion alum and reminded us of our many blessings

**Field Trip permission forms came home Friday for our May 11 EXTENDED DAY Lutheran Heritage field trip.  Please email me with any questions.  We could use one more parent chaperone as well.

Week 34: Chapel Helpers and Poetry Wrap Up

A special THANK YOU to Grace K, Avery, Kayla, Jack, Ryan, and Ben for acting in chapel. I recruited them on Monday for a drama about sharing the story of our faith.  They gave up 2 recesses to help prepare.  We were able to encourage our schoolmates that we LOVE TO TELL THE STORY and the most important message is how much Jesus loves us and how His forgiveness changes our hearts.  You kids are awesome!

Happy National Poetry Month!

We started our poetry unit with a few groans and ended it with deep discussions of metaphors!   I was proud that kids picked subjects and poets that were meaningful and took the time to reflect.  I know its probably TABOO for mom or dad to step into the JH building, but please embarrass your child and stop by before or after school to check their Concrete Poems and Cross Art in the JH building.  In another week, the display will change to show off the Famous Poet Posters.

Next in Lit:

Tuck Everlasting

Students began reading the novel,  Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt and will be leading small group discussions in "book club" format.  We are exploring the literary elements of foreshadowing, character development, motive, and universal theme as the characters ponder the benefits and downfalls of living forever.  It is exciting to look at the novel through the eyes of faith as we will discuss God's original design in Eden as well as our eternal life in the heavenly home He has prepared for us.  Students are discovering the blessings God gives us in this life through the many stages we live and even more blessings to be received in eternity with Him!  We will culminate the novel with creative projects.

Midquarter

Today marks the MidQuarter of the 4th quarter.  It's a great time to have your child check their grades and help them set goals for the remainder of the year.  One great idea for a goal - Finish AR points a WEEK BEFORE they are due!!

May Field Trip - Save the Date

Friday, May 11 will be our Lutheran Heritage Field trip.  This is an extended day, arriving at 6:40 a.m. and returning by 5:30 p.m. that evening.  Please mark your calendars accordingly.  We will be studying immigration, geneology, and the history of Lutherans in our area.  Our day will include a trip to the Altenburg Museum and Saxon Lutheran Memorial in Frohna, MO.  This is a colonial homestead where students will learn about the first Lutheran settlers, tour the homestead, and have an opportunity for trying chores such as laundry and grinding corn.  Our day includes seeing the first Concordia Seminary and a one room schoolhouse.

Thanks to a generous sponsorship from the PTL, we are able to take a charter bus for the trip.  Watch for permission slips to come home next week!  I am still looking for another parent to join us for the trip.

Week 33: He is Risen! Best Choice & CFNA

He is Risen!  Alleluia!
May you and your loved ones be blessed knowing the certainty of the resurrection and the forgiveness that Christ won for you on the cross!

BEST CHOICE

It has been a good week!  We thank Ms. Medrona and Ms. Ambria from Thrive: Best Choice for being our guest educators this week.  It was great for our students to interact with young adults who care about them and were such great witnesses!

Good conversations can take place when comparing modern media such as "Big Bang Theory",  or "Friends" (which is back "in" with young people) or modern music, with "classic" family shows "I Love Lucy", "Full House", "Family Matters", and "Fresh Prince."  What a difference in the conflicts, consequences, and how people deal with problems. What a difference in how families are portrayed.  When we listen to music, watch shows, or play video games it can affect us emotionally, even when we don't agree with the message.  Not all media is bad, but we need to be careful about what we put into our minds and hearts.  God has called us as parents to help our children make wise decisions and set boundaries for them.  (under the websites tab, see CommonSenseMedia for help.  I LOVE this site!!)

RESEARCH PAPERS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The first draft of the research paper is due Tuesday.  This might be a good time to check in with your child have see how things are going.  Read over their draft and help them use the "read aloud" technique to see if ideas flow and sentences make sense.

CFNA Packing!

Thanks to the families who made donations for new immigrants.  We had a wonderful time composing messages of welcome and encouragement.  We used many favorite Bible passages too.  It's not too late!  We still have 17 of our 30 bags that could use a small stuffed animal.  Socks or other fun items like mini coloring books and crayons would also fit into our bags.  Please send in items by Monday or Tuesday.
