HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration.   I am so thankful for each one of your children in my class this year. What a blessing they are to me!  Thank you, parents, as well, for the support you give to your children and to me. I hope you are able to enjoy this holiday week with family and friends!
A special thank you for the birthday gift and cupcake treats from the class.  I will enjoy doing a little shopping when we have a free evening at the teacher's conference this week.

Midquarter
Today marks the midpoint of 2nd quarter.  It is a good time to talk with your child about the Friday papers that came home, check grades on Sycamore, and help them set goals for the 2nd half.  A great goal?  READ over the break!  Get those AR points before the last week of December!!!  And your kids are not too old to read with you.  You can model fluency and have great conversations over books.  Traveling?  Listen to audio books in the car.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you have about your child's progress.
What's happening?
Religion - We have begun our study of the New Testament!  Student's got into our textbooks with a look at the Kairos of God - his just right time for sending us a Savior.  A perfect tie into the coming Advent season.  Check out the Religion tab above for more details.

Math-G math wrapped up factors, GCF, and LCM.  We will supplement the Pearson text to review fraction concepts before jumping into operations with fractions.

T math wrapped up solving basic algebraic equations and will begin the fraction foundations of understanding divisibility, factors, GCF, and LCM

S.S.-
In Social Studies we held the "Great Lakes Debate" looking at the conditions of this ecosystem from the 1960's until present day.  Pollution, invasive species and habitat loss are all examples of Human-Environment Interaction.
After break students will be involved in research of these environmental issues around North America and present their findings with a Prezi. Students are playing with this online presentation tool to get comfortable with it.

Lit.-  We wrapped up Short Stories and will start a class novel unit next.

Art- Our Christmas paintings are off to a great start.  Students are enjoying learning to work with acrylics on a larger canvas.  Mark your calendar to stop by the JH Christmas Art display in the main school building Dec. 11th (after 9:00 a.m.) and 12th

LOOKING TO GET INTO GOD'S WORD?
Now is a great time to get started.  New Bible studies begin this Sunday at Zion.  Can't make it tomorrow?  It is pretty easy to jump in at any time.  Find us in the lower level of the church.

Please join us Sundays 9:30-10:15 from November 11- December 30
  • "Bringing Up Girls and Boys," led by Jon and Amy Bernhardt   Practical advice and encouragement on shaping the next generation This study will use video clips of Dr. James Dobson and small group discussion that will offer advice and encouragement rooted in biblical principles on raising strong, healthy and confident children.
  • "Life Makes Sense," led by Rev. Terry Weinhold  Come discover or rediscover the prophecies of Matthew.  They are for today and for our daily comfort and use.  Join us to see how life fits together.
  • "What Happens Next?"  led by DCE Aaron Hansen  In this Bible study both youth and adults can take a look at the Epistle lesson of 1Peter to get a better understanding of what lies in our future as Christians.  We will be tested.  We will be set apart for a greater purpose.  We will suffer.  We will submit.  We will be given a faith forged by fire.  Gaining a realistic understanding of what it means to be a disciple and some foresight into what is to come as we grow older in Christ.
AND FOR Junior High - C.H.A.O.S.  Meets in Mr. Braddy's room with Jeff and Taylor Demien.  A fun approach to Bible study and I hear there is always FOOD!

Happening in 6R

**In Lit. we have been learning how writer's develop characters.  We turned the story, "Dragon, Dragon" into a drama to help illustrate character traits and enact a plot.  We learned about pantomime and expression, too.  Sorry - left the pictures on the iPod at school.  I'll upload them on Monday.

This Wednesday our Faith Families met together to learn about Service.  We talked about different types of service, we showed how we serve one another, and we learned about those who serve our country.  As a way to thank those who serve our country we made Christmas cards for the U.S.O.  We also had the opportunity to celebrate baptismal birthdays for October, November, and December.

Faith families include 1-8 graders.  We worship together in chapel and do devotion and service activities togethers

Our First through Sixth grade students have been working on their Sport Stacking skills during their PE classes. Sport Stacking (also known as Speed Stacking or Cup Stacking) is a sport in which specially designed cups are stacked in specific patterns as quickly as possible. It has been called a “track meet for your hands” and not only improves eye-hand coordination, but also academic learning. “Students that sport stack on a regular basis have shown increases in test scores and levels of concentration. When students sport stack they are crossing the "midline" of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. These new connections help to spur brain growth which in turn promotes greater academic achievement.” Not only that---SPORT STACKING is FUN! To find out more about Sport Stacking please go to www.speedstacks.com.

Mrs. Steinbacher has a selection of Standard Cups and StackMats available for purchase. The Standard Cups may be purchased for $20.00. The StackMats are $25.00. You may purchase a set of Standard Cups and a StackMat for the discounted price of $40.00. There is no tax or shipping charges on your items.  You may pay by check made out to “Zion Lutheran School”, or you may pay by cash. See the flyer that came home today.
