Week 2: Into the Groove!

 From the Class bloggers:

August 27, 2021, by Ryleigh and Autumn

This week was the first full week of school. We started our first spelling

assignment, we did pop art, and our first quiz of the school year in Science,

and someone broke Eddie Bonesy’s jaw. Today for lunch is bosco sticks.

The word of the week is composition. Students are excited to finish their

Bible minibook. All of us are getting new jobs but some people will keep

their job and switch the week after that. More next week from Ryleigh and

Caileigh!

From Mrs. R:

Thank you so much for attending our parent informtion meeting last night.  Students now have over a full week under their belts and a sense of how classes and transitions go.  We are getting better at routines and organization with fewer reminders. Students are learning how to think first of others (pushing in chairs, wearing masks in mixed settings, helping distribute hymnals in church).  We have found lots to do at indoor recess in this crazy heat!

We are learning....

Religion - Law/Gospel, genres of the Bible

G and T Math - Double digit multiplication, Area and Perimeter, supporting our thinking

Social Studies - Map tools, Latitude and Longitude

Literature: Using annotation tools in Common Lit as we make predictions

Science: Electricity

Art: Line, Pop art

English: Types of sentences, prepositions

Do we think flat?

Locating hemispheres on the globe

A peek into Math Discussion

"Shouldn't 28 x 16 and 16 x 28 be the same? But they don't match."

"How could you model this? Is there a

                            picture you think of?"

"Hmm, that looks like a lot more than 100 and some chairs!!!"

"What am I missing?  How did you do it?"

"I checked my calculating and I think I did it all right."

"How does this model show the parts of the problem?"

"Oh - you multiply the 10 by the 20 and        then the 10 by the 8.    You multiply the different place values!"

"I see now!  I forgot the 0 that makes it the 20 x 16 instead of 2 x 16."

Week 1: A New Year!

 From the class bloggers:

August 20, 2021, by Ryleigh and Autumn

This week was short but exciting! In the first week of school we had

the first day of band, choir, as well as gym too! It was spirit day today

and the first Friday of the school year. It was also the first day for art class.

We began line art for our first art project of the year. It was the fire drill for

grades 6-8. We had an awesome first week of school!

(more photos to come - I forgot the iPod!!)

From Mrs. R.

I'm so excited to have your children as my students this year. Our school theme gives a wonderful focus for our year:

John 20:21   Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.  As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you."

We addressed the elephant in the room and have been talking about when to wear masks, sitting in "crews," washing hands A LOT, and keeping our loved ones safe.  It takes practice!  We had a chance to share our worries, but also the excitement to be back together as a Zion family.  The kids have a good attitude!  And we know God is in control.

I am eager to partner with you in both educating and nurturing your child this year. I encourage families to talk about lessons we learn, especially memory verses and Religion lessons.  I look forward to seeing you in worship at Zion (in person or virtually) or hearing about your worship experiences at your home church as our class grows together in our faith walk.

What's Happening in Grade 6?
Lots and lots of "here's how we do things" this week: how to organize a binder and a desk, and how to use a planner.  The students have been good listeners and getting right into the routine.

One of my big goals this year is for students to become more independent in their learning. This news blog will update you on current happenings, but in 6th grade I no longer publish spelling words, memory assignments, or tests.  These are things your child will be tracking in their assignment planner.  If an individual student needs more organizational help, I will work one-on-one with that student.  I plan to publish this blog weekly on Fridays. (In reality, it may be Saturday mornings some weeks!)

Reminders:

1. Water Bottles: Students should bring a water bottle.  Please be sure the lid clicks closed. (no straw cups)

2. Gym/Band/Strings and Classroom Music will be will be Tues/Thurs.

3. The PTL Back to School Night is Thursday, August 26 at 6:30 p.m. This is an "adult only" information night.  Join the 2 sixth grade teachers together in my classroom to hear further information about the unique aspects of 6th grade.  I look forward to seeing you again!

There will be three sessions available to attend so you can get to all of your children's teachers. 6:30, 7:00 or 7:30 p.m.
