Hark - The Students Lead Advent Worship! Student led worship is back! Grades 5 and 6 will lead Zion church in worship
on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 10:00 a.m and 7:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity
for our students as they help our congregation prepare for the Lord's coming.
Attendance is expected at both services, so please mark your calendars now and
keep the date open. Let me know of any conflicts right away as parts will be
assigned soon. We are eager to begin preparations for leading worship as December
will be here before we know it. During the coming weeks, all students will learn songs selected to reinforce their
message. Students will also have opportunities to try various roles in the service,
such as special drama, readings, or “behind the scenes” parts. Part of our Memory
Work assignments will shift focus to learning songs and lines. Students will also
have an opportunity to share their special musical talents. Any student who has
had at least 2 years of music lessons may audition. Selections must be:
1) sacred music related to the Advent or Christmas seasons of the church year 2) practiced and ready to audition the by the second week of November.
Some Current Units:
Religion: Students explored the LCMS website with a focus on learning about mission work. This stemmed from our look at what messages were in the Epistles, letters written by the apostles to the early Christian churches scattered around the world at that time. We wrap up our study of What is in the Bible this week with Revelation.
Literature: We completed our unit on Fiction/Nonfiction with
a look at author's perspective, tone, inferences and symbolism. We
read a character sketch of Mark Twain written by his 13-year-old
daughter, Susy. This week we watched the 1937 classic The Prince and the Pauper. The kids loved this old black and white film! You should have heard them cheer at the climax! Now they are writing their own character sketches from the film.
S.S. We explored
thematic maps and using global information systems which involve
layering maps to find information about physical features,
climate, vegetation and how they affect population and economic
activity. We used ARC -GIS software to draw conclusions about settlement and surface water. Focus: US and CANADA world region.
Math - Both classes are applying addition and multiplication of decimals in the concept of surface area. G Math tested last week and learned the order of operations to be ready to use in creating and solving algebraic expressions. T Math will be testing over area Monday and then continue with the same concepts. We nickname the rules for solving math expressions in order: PEMDAS
P - Parentheses first
E - Exponents next
Mulptiply andDivide IN ORDER from left to right
Add and Subtract IN ORDER from left to right (Can you guess the "in order" part confuses most?)
Memory this week
Help your child by sharing this resource:
We will begin our Reformation study next week looking at the history of the Lutheran church, but memory of one of Martin Luther's great hymns starts now. It is based on Psalm 46.
This week was pretty busy, a lot of homework had to be done. Our choir
sang at chapel on Wednesday. It sounded great. ARis due October 18.
With trunk or treat on October 15.Our class raised over $ 1,090.25 with
more to come on Monday. We are trying to reach 5,000 dollars for the
kids in Cambodia. Hopefully this hot weather will leave and we can feel
the crisp fall weather. That's all for this week.
Mission for Afghan Refugees
We have been approved for a Thrivent Action grant! I am shopping for toiletry items for my class to bag into Welcome Kits for newcomers to the St. Louis area. Check out the organization Christian Friends of New Americans, whom we will work with. I am asking 6R families, if you are able, to provide small toy items or new socks that could fit in a 2-gallon ziploc with other items: Small stuffed animal, deck of cards, hot wheels, etc. I know there are a lot of giving opportunities right now. so we will be OK if you are not able to help right now. The kids will be writing encouraging messages to go into the bags. My goal is 21 bags, one from each student. We are asking Zion church and school families who are able to help to provide bigger items.
gifts cards (Walmart, Aldi, Schnuck's, Target) - any amount
Paper towels
Toilet paper
Cleaning supplies
New blankets
Our target packing date is Friday, October 22 and I may be seeking help to deliver items that weekend.
