Week 33 Novel Unit and Wartburg photos

From the Class Bloggers April 29, 2022 Kate and Will

In science on Tuesday we had a germ lab which was a block period. We went

upstairs to the science lab in Mrs. Crenshaw’s room. Our 5th graders also left for camp

Wartburg on Wednesday. Our 8th graders left for their class trip to Kansas City on

Thursday. Also on Wednesday we had a block day for social studies and we worked

on a big ThingLink for the whole 6th grade. Everyone picked a random country in the

European Union to research about. In math we are working with Algebra tiles. In gym

class on Thursday we did dodgeball. That's about it!

Tuck Everlasting

WHAT IF YOU COULD LIVE FOREVER????  In Literature, students have begun the novel,  Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt.  Kids are leading small group discussions in "book club" format, with the roles of Discussion Director, Connector, Illustrator, and Word Wizard.  We will be exploring the literary elements of foreshadowing, character development, motive, and universal theme as the characters ponder the benefits and downfalls of living forever.  It will be exciting to look at the novel through the eyes of faith as we discussed God's original design in Eden as well as our eternal life in the heavenly home he has prepared for us.  Students are discovering the blessings God gives us in this life through the many stages we live and even more blessings to be received in eternity with Him!  We will culminate the novel with creative projects.

READING IS INDEPENDENT for much of the book.  An audio version is available on GC.

Week 32 Camp Wartburg

What an amazing day we had!  God blessed us with beautiful weather and a great experience bonding with our classmates.  Students learned to think creatively, challenge themselves to conquer obstacles (mud? the Wall??), and encourage one another.  Even when the van broke down and we had to adjust - students supported one another and made the best of things when life doesn't always go as planned.  I treasure this group of students and I hope many memories were made.  Thanks to all the parent chaperones - we couldn't have done it without you!

Parents, there will be some sort of slideshow/file with all pictures that we will share by the end of next week with pictures from Camp Wartburg. The pictures I have are limited to only a certain few students since they were in my group. I will post them below and also include them in the slideshow/file. Check out the link to Mrs. Donner's blog for a few more pics.

Spring Dance 2022
Student Council would like to let you know in advance the details of this year's Junior High Spring Dance. The dance will take place on May 6 from 7:00 to 9:30PM. The theme for this dance will be glow in the dark/neon, and students can dress up to fit this theme by wearing a neon or white t-shirt with a pair of jeans or sweats! Junior High students must pay a five dollar entry fee, must go to Zion Lutheran School to attend, and are not permitted to leave until the dance is over. They are allowed to bring phones but we ask that they put them away after the first forty-five minutes have passed so that we can have some fun! We are excited to host another successful dance this year!

Best Choice
At the beginning of May, we welcome an educator from Best Choice to lead our Religion classes. Through this program, students will be involved in active discussions about setting goals, healthy relationships, puberty, and making God-pleasing decisions. The Best Choice program is designed to encourage children to make lifelong commitments to building relationships, making informed choices, choosing abstinence before marriage, and avoiding risky behaviors.

Mrs. Donner and I will participate in the classes and continue follow up discussions. A permission slip will come home MONDAY, APRIL 25 to sign and return for your child to participate. To help you prepare for discussions with your child at home, here are the topics Best Choice has used in the past. I will update you daily with our discussions. Classes start Monday, May 9. I pray that you use these as opportunities to open the dialogue with your child and share your values with them. Research shows parents are still the number one influence on their teens! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

  • Monday: Goals, Risky Behaviors, and Decision Making
  • Tuesday:  Respect, Friendships, Healthy vs. Unhealthy Relationships, Refusal Skills
  • Thursday: Male/Female Puberty
  • Friday: Media Influence, Emotional Consequences, Boundaries, Avoidance Techniques

VBS- VBS this year is in person June 20-24 and 6th graders can be helpers!  Please chat with your child and if they are able to volunteer we would love to have their help!

Week 31: Good Friday - Happy Easter!

 Jesus Completes Our Salvation

Our Religion unit is not merely the focal point of all of our studies of our Christian faith this year; it is also the focus of the entire Bible. And by God’s grace, it is also the focus of our entire lives! Our studies in math and science and social studies are essential for daily life; but it is in our study of Scripture that all these blessings find their true purpose and meaning through life in Christ. God blesses us with intelligence and abilities and talents, and He guides us to use these for our personal welfare—it is true. But He also desires that we use these blessings for the good of others and for the glory of the Lord.

Our focus in this unit has been on Holy Week and the events surrounding it. Here, we see God’s covenant promises coming together and being fulfilled in Christ Jesus. We cannot save ourselves; only Jesus could do that for us, because He is the sinless Son of God. Amazingly, He is also our substitute! He gives His victory to us!

Jesus suffered all things, died on the cross, and rose at Easter to complete our salvation. It is finished! He offers us the gifts of forgiveness and eternal life through His loving grace and mercy. May God bless your family time this EASTER SEASON with the assurance from Jesus that...

In my Father's house are many rooms.  If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where i am, you may be also.  John 14:2-3

Fewer people "crossed the channel" to the UK

Most countries adopted the euro - no more currency exchanges!

Except Poland didn't use the euro - oh this is still confusing!!
