Week 25: Field Trip Fun!

From the Class Bloggers: BY: Graham and Lucas

Today is finally that last day of the week. On monday it was Presidents

day so we did not have school. Tuesday was our first day back at school

from a four day weekend. Wednesday we had a field trip to a play called

Spells Of The Sea. The class said they did not like the show that much.

(Teacher note: the comment I overhears was "it wasn't as good as

the movie we saw Friday." ) After that we went to the art museum and

the favorite arts were the paintings because they had a history to them.

Thursday was pretty slow for the class because of the field trip the previous

day. And finally today is friday the 8th grade girls are going to state for

basketball, and all of the cheerleaders went also. And we have no science

or social studies because we are watching a movie.

Reminders:

Book Fair:  Our class shopping day is Wednesday.  Here's our QR code if you would like to donate to our class library.

Grandparents Day:  We are getting excited to celebrate our grandparents and special guests on Friday. See below for details.

Have you filled out our form yet to let me know about attendance and pickup on Friday.  Here's the link:  https://forms.gle/cJFRnrW4YoVXptFE7

What's happening in 6th grade?

Religion -   Along with our study of Jesus ministry, we began using  Lenten devotions that show us Jesus walk to the cross for us.

S.S.  Our class is exploring the country of India and our connection to the Information Technology industry there through outsourcing IT jobs.

Math - G-Math is exploring ratio relationsips and will begin unit rates.  T-Math is getting into the meat of fraction multiplication and division and will next apply fractions in volume problems.

Art -  Students are researching different styles of crosses and their background to inspire a unique cross art project based on a Scripture verse.

Lit. - We wrapped up our nonfiction study with a reflective essay by Helen Keller.  The class was amazed by news footage of how Helen learned to speak and read finger-spelling by touch.  They reviewed our unit by focusing on one of our articles and analyzing all of its non-fiction elements.   We celebrated the end of the unit by watching The Miracle Worker, Helen Keller's story.  This one the kids DID love!!

Science - Ask your child about their Monster Genetics project!!

English - RESEARCH PAPER begins next week!

Enjoy some pictures - not chronological

Week 23: Sermon on the Mount/2nd Step

We had a wonderful chapel service this week where Mr. Stock looked at anger and how God empowers us to not allow anger to lead into sin (imagine not opening a shaken soda can).  In 2nd Step, over the last few weeks we have been  exploring bully situations and looking at the difference between bullying the sometime "mean moments" we have as sinful people.  We have identified face to face vs behind the back bullying and role played scenarios.   We talked about how the devil would love to tear our relationships apart, yet God gives us the Holy Spirit to empower us to make good choices, to love our neighbor and our enemy, to turn the other cheek and to reconcile with one another (read the Sermon on the Mount in Matt. 5:5-7) - to be kind and forgiving.

Here was the video I shared this week with a few tips to help a student feel more in control in a bully situation .  The kids really enjoyed it!

Week 22: Character Day!

From the class blogger:

By Olivia

This Monday we had an ice day so we didn't do anything. Tuesday we had

gym then there was band and strings.Wednesday we had chapel with the

preschoolers and we learned about the Heart Challenge. Thursday we had

gym, band, and strings again. Friday we got a new art assignment.

 From Mrs.R

Here some of the units of study we are doing:

Religion - Discovering the role of the Holy Spirit.  (Ask your child if they know how the Holy Spirit is like a swiss cheese maker).  Students are reading parts of the Sermon on the Mount and creating real life application of how the H.S. works through our lives in original skits.

S.S. - We completed the online Mission to India with webquests each day of Lutheran Schools week exploring the climate, geography, and culture of that nation.  Thanks to generous chapel offerings, we will be sending funds to support 9 youth camps sponsored by Lutheran Hour Ministries!  We are currently learning about the impact of monsoons on this region.

Lit - Nonfiction unit:  We read excerpts from Zlata's Diary, about the war in Bosnia. We read an article on Jackie Robinson and took time out to discuss the Civil Rights movement with documentary clips.  Next up a comparison of biography and auto biography with writings about Lincoln and children's author, Beverly Cleary.

Science - Check out the students cell creations below!

Auction Project - Book Lover's Bundle

Thanks to all who have contributed to make our contribution to the Zion auction fun.  If you still want to contribute, please do so THIS WEEK so we have time to gather gift cards. Remember you can send in gift cards or cash to go with our gift.  Monetary donations can also go to Mrs. Donner

 Contributions needed by Feb. 10!!

I highly recommend the Zion PTL Education night!! Amy Moss is a wonderful speaker with years of counseling experience.  I have heard her speak at several teachers' conferences and I always come away with new insights into both teacher and parent relationships with students.
