Week 26: Student teacher and LOTS of news!!

We had a busy Friday with our Heart Challenge - Rope jumping event.  I had fun jumping a little with the kids and feel pretty proud to have made lasting into the final 3 in a  Knock Out competition.  Thanks to our wonderful PE teacher, Mrs. Steinbacher, who finds creative ways to make fitness fun for all!  Scroll to the bottom for a few pictures.

Welcome Miss Davis
We welcome a student teacher from Concordia University in Seward, NE to our classroom on Monday, March 1 through April 26.  Miss Hannah Davis will be completing her student teaching practicum with me.  We look forward to having Miss Davis as a teacher in our class!

Field Trip- The Giver, this Friday
Thanks to all the parents who have volunteered to get us to LHS on Friday morning.  We will send a reminder to you this week, but plan to drop off as normal, grab a coffee, and return by 8:20 to take the crew to LHS.  The bus will bring us back to Zion around 11:15.

We are seeing the play, The Giver, based on Lois Lowry's novel.  Here is a synopsis:

The Giver is a story of a brilliant boy named Jonas who happens to live in a society that is being controlled by the rules and tradition of The Elders.  Through his wisdom and mannerism, Jonas is selected as the Receiver of Memory, a post that distinguishes him from others and gives him authority. He follows the rules and receives wisdom in the form of memories, but soon becomes upset with the rules. He is shocked at the killing of babies and others.  Jonas, finally, wants to get rid of this society and saves the baby that is being released or killed by his father. The two go to Elsewhere to in search of freedom, hope, life and colors.   www.barnesandnoble.com

It’s a Dino-Mite Book Fair

Zion’s Annual Book Fair is coming up!  It’s going to be Dino-Mite!  All proceeds will benefit the Zion School Library.  This year, our All For Books donations will help the The Arch Community School, the charter school at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Louis.

NEW this year is the option for parents and kids to pay with the Book Fair eWalletMany parents don’t carry cash anymore, or have cash on hand when their child delivers the news… “Mom! Dad! It’s Book Fair day!”  The eWallet is a digital payment option offered through Scholastic that gives parents a safer alternative to sending their children to school with cash.  It’s easily funded using a credit card, but with the convenience of setting a spending limit.   See the flyer in Friday Folders on how to set up your students’ eWallet by visiting http://www.scholastic.com/bf/zionlutheranschool4

This must be done prior to their class’ visit to the book fair in order to be utilized.

Book Fair Hours

Wednesday, 3/6 (Class Visit Day/ Ash Wednesday)   8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, 3/7 (PS/ K Grandparents Day)    8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Friday, 3/8 (1-8 Grandparents Day)   8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Diary of An Awesomely Friendly Kid Pre-Sale

Our students also have the opportunity to pre-order a specially priced paperback edition of Jeff Kinney’s new book series, Diary of An Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal.  To order your copy, complete the pre-sale form and either return it to your child’s teacher with payment (don’t forget the tax!) or send the order form with your student on their book fair day.  Order Forms will come home on March 1st. The book is scheduled for release on 4/9/19, and the students should receive their copy within 5-7 days.

Calling All Volunteers!

It’s time for our annual Zion Book Fair!  We are excited for a Dino-Mite Good Time!  We would love any and all help you can offer to help make this year’s book fair a success!   To Sign Up, Click Here

Week 25: What's happening!

From the class bloggers Gideon S. and Katelyn D.

On Monday we had a Memory Meditation on the 2nd petition. We have started to memorize all of the petitions and everyone is doing well. On Tuesday T-Math had a math test. On Wednesday everyone had a Geography test and everyone did well on that. On Thursday in Geography we got to go outside and create a population circle. We had some orange paper friends that joined us as well. Friday G-Math had a test and we made paper mache hands. And some volunteers go help the first graders do the Kids Heart Challenge. If you donate 5 or more dollars you get to wear sweats to school and do an extra gym day next Friday. And if you donate 15 dollars you will get a free t-shirt to go along with your sweats day. The pictures below shows some of our fellow classmates making their paper mache hands. We made a sign language letter.

The bloggers missed another highlight - Science class stopping down to see the sausage making process!  Kids got a change to see what internal organs looked like.  A few brave souls ventured to touch them, too.  Remember that Zion's Sausage Supper in this Sunday!

From Mrs. R.

Special Thanks!
To our room moms for the Valentines Snacks!

What's Happening in 6th Grade
Here's a few topics we are exploring:
Religion -  Humiliation and Exaltation of Jesus!!  That's looking at Christ's nature as true God and true Man, how he fulfilled the Law perfectly to be our substitute in His death and in glory defeated the devil in His resurrection.
S.S. Our Asian studies move from looking at the IT industry that connects American businesses to India, to now exploring population issues.  Our class simulated the rate of population growth on Thursday and will now use China as a way to look at how countries meet the challenges of large and growing populations.  As demographers we will use a lot of statistics, including 2018 country data from our Junior Scholastic World Almanacs.
Math - G-Math wrapping up ratios and unit rates.  T-Math is getting into the meat of fraction operations.  Grocery shopping for the best buy based on unit rate and cooking (doubling recipes) are great hands on ways to reinforce these concepts at home.
Lit. - Our nonfiction unit has included essays on African Americans in baseball and Jackie Robinson.  We took time to study a bit of the Civil Rights Movement as we explored informational articles.  I hope  you take the opportunity to talk about important moments in history and how we are all equal in God's eyes.   After our Civil Rights video we watched Speak Life by contemporary Christian artist, Toby Mac.

We are now reading a Lincoln biography now (Happy Birthday, Abe!!)  and will compare the style of writing to an autobiography of author Beverly Cleary.

Week 24: God gives us Worth!

From the class bloggers Jacob and Gideon-

This week we had some fun activities. On Friday we used paper mashe to make hands. The hands were letters in sign language. We had fun interviewing our parents to see what their childhood was like. We learned the Introduction and the First Petition for memory. They were long but we now know a part of the Lord's Prayer. Although it was challenging we have God's word in our brain and that is the most important thing of all. Sincerely, Your Bloggers.

From Mrs. R-
GOD GIVES US WORTH!
A special thank you to parents and grandparents for taking the time to be interviewed by your child this past weekend.  You opened up a wonderful line of communication for your child to talk about these "growing up" years and the struggles we sometimes face with fitting in.  Thank you for your openness.  You are a great witness to share the importance of your relationship with God and the value He gives us as His children.  Check out the Religion tab above to see what we are currently studying as we walk through the life of Christ.

Week 23.2: Ski photos

God blessed us with a beautiful day!  Kids worked hard to learn the basics of skiing.  I was so pleased to see their patience and encouragement of one another.  Thanks to all of the parent who helped make our ski trip possible.  We couldn't have done it without you.

Valentine's Day
Our room moms will plan for a small morning party to celebrate Valentine's Day.  Bringing valentines is completely optional - kids will enjoy food and social time!  If your child wishes to bring valentines, please bring one for each student in 6R.  Remember no candy.  There are also no personal gifts to be given on campus (See the Family Directory in the "Resources" tab of Sycamore for further information on school policy).

More Pictures from our week.  Thanks to class photographers, Maddie and Grace for a lot of these shots!
