Week 14: Happy Thanksgiving!

From the class blogger: November 19, 2021 ~ Sammie

This week was very fun. On Tuesday, 6th graders enjoyed World Cup

Stacking Day. We also continued our Christmas project and are painting

canvases. We finally have people getting back from quarantine and

catching up with what's going on.

Thanks to all for making my birthday special. I am overwhelmed by the

love of these kids and you! Mrs. Donner and the class did a great job

keeping the surprise. Thank you for the cards, tea, cookies, snacks,

gift cards and gifts.  We had a fun celebration at the end of the day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

God's blessings to you and your families this Thanksgiving. I am so thankful for each one of your children in my class this year. What a blessing they are to me!  Thank you, parents, as well, for the support you give to your children and to me. Enjoy the holiday week with family and friends!

Week 13 Virtual Learning and Cup stacking

 Virtual learning -

THANK YOU!! for all of your help at home and running up to get materials.  I am gradually sorting through assignments.  Sycamore will  not be updated this weekend.  Please keep asking questions.  Remember our Open House zooms with both teachers are at 3:00  on school days (Mrs. Donner sends a link) and I am happy to set up individual chats to answer questions at other times.  Looking forward to having you back with us soon!  (SCROLL DOWN TO LAST WEEK FOR HELPFUL TIPS)

No 5/6 Advent service

Below is the information from the office about our service.  I was unable to share the news with students today, so please talk with your child.  Although it is very disappointing to not have this opportunity to lead worship, we will find other ways to celebrate the advent season as a class.

Note, student musicians who auditioned or plan to audition after quarantine may still play their piece for morning chapel on Dec. 1.  Keep practicing!!  Memory assignments for next week will be canceled.  (This week - still finish please!!)

A note from administration:

5th and 6th Grade Parents,

Grades 5 and 6 were scheduled for leading our Advent service on December 1st.  At this time we have decided not to host those services.  Reasons behind this decision are the following:

  • Many of the 6th grade students have been out of school for quarantine or positive cases in the past week.  Therefore, preparation for the services have been difficult.
  • Safety of mixing classes for rehearsals and then for the services was considered as we do all we can to minimize the spread of the virus.
  • The last two Advent services hosted by the 3rd and 4th graders as well as the 1st and 2nd graders are still scheduled to proceed as planned.

We know this is a disappointing decision, and kids will miss out on leading those services.  We will have a 8am chapel service that Wednesday morning for the 1st thru 8th graders to attend.Prayers are with all of you as we get into the Thanksgiving and Advent seasons.

Week 12: Quarantine

Illness and quarantine are never convenient. Thanks to families who contacted the school right away and for families being understanding of these unique times. God is good! We will make it through. Parents and students under quarantine received an email from me Friday morning with basic instructions. A few tips:

KIDS:

  • start your day with a devotion!! Maybe read a page of your devo journal or check out this site:
  • check email and your "Assignments to Turn In" doc each morning
  • look back at Assignment sheet regularly, plans may change (see tabs at bottom for week)
  • watch lesson videos before attempting homework if there is a video
  • send back work in person or email photos if they are not digital assignments
  • due dates are "flexible" - work one day at a time.
  • Teachers are hear to help!! Attend the "Open House" zooms. Email questions

PARENTS:

  • Pick up materials in the office foyer between 3:00-3:30 p.m.
  • Drop off HW in the office either before or after school or help your child email photos
  • Monday pickup should have most materials for the week. Teachers will email if anything new needs to be picked up later in the week.

This week was pretty exciting. Joyful noise is practicing for lessons and carols. We started rehearsing for our advent service with the 5th graders. We also started a fun Christmas art project. We got to use microscopes in Science. Although it was shorter than usual we had a great week. That's all for this week.

Week 11: Happy Reformation!

From the class bloggers: October 27, 2021 Kate and Reese:

Although this week was short it was full of fun. Our string players performed durning

chapel on Wednesday. Mr. Kuhlman led it. We had our English test on

Wednesday as well. The weather got a little bit more chilly than other weeks,

but we still enjoyed it. Our harvest party was fun and we had some yummy treats.

We hope you had a great week too. That's all for this week!

Happy Reformation!

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 theses on the local church "bulletin board" calling people to debate the truth of the Bible and how the church had strayed from that truth.  Our class is learning about Luther's life as well as the amazing discovery he made:  WE ARE SAVED BY GOD'S GRACE  - not by good works or money or penance.  This led to a reform of the church and the creation of Protestant churches around the world.

We are finishing a biography of Luther written as if Luther visited sixth graders at a Lutheran school and ate lunch with them for the week, modeled after the Table Talks Luther actually had with students for much of his life.  We are also using clips from the Luther Movie made in 2003.  Though there are some fictional details added, the heart of the movie shows Luther's struggle to understand God and share with the world about God's love.  (Note if you watch- the movie is PG-13 for some violence and language.  Sections for class have been selected as appropriate for students and our study.)  Student also will use modern "social media" to spread Scripture that refutes the false teaching of Luther's day through Flipgrid videos.

We will wrap up our Reformation this week as we examine Luther's motto: Grace Alone,  Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, Christ Alone.

Cup Stacking is Back!!

2021 STACK UP

sponsored by the World Sport Stacking Association.

Our First through Sixth grade students will be working on their Sport Stacking skills during their PE classes for the next few weeks. Sport Stacking (also known as Speed Stacking or Cup Stacking) is a sport in which specially designed cups are stacked in specific patterns as quickly as possible. It has been called a “track meet for your hands” and not only improves eye-hand coordination, but also academic learning.  When students sport stack they are crossing the midline of their bodies and developing new connections in their brains. Not only that---SPORT STACKING is FUN and competitive!

Our Sport Stacking unit will culminate the week of November 15, 2021 as we add Zion’s  number of Sport Stackers to that of people stacking all over the world. This year we will attempt to break the 2019 World Record of 624,390 students participating in the event.

If you are interested in purchasing equipment for your child please use Zion’s  direct link: speedstacks.com/go-direct/37067-10346742.  Mrs. Steinbacher recommends purchasing a set of cups and the timing mat with the timer as seeing your time improve with practice is very motivational. Our sale runs from Nov. 1  through Dec. 12, 2021. Your purchase also helps raise funds for additional PE equipment for Zion.

Please contact Mrs. Steinbacher at msteinbacher@zionharvester.org with any questions.

Thanks for planning a fun Harvest Party, room moms!
