Week 30 Dissection time and May Field Trip

You get 2 weeks of bloggers!  Due to our internet  being out at Zion last Friday, I missed Eddie's article from last week:

BY EDDIE (Because I can use the Offline and no one else can)

This week, we raised about $1200 for Bethlehem. We started a new art project: we make objects

then draw a little part of it, like through a keyhole. We’ve been continuing our Research Paper

on our endangered animals. We’re up to doing the First Draft for it. This week, we tested what environments worms preferred in science. We’ve been learning about invertebrates. The Internet

was down all day on Friday, so we didn’t do as much as planned.

On Monday in literature we started our poetry unit. Tuesday/Wednesday, the first draft for

our English research papers were due. Wednesday, Mr. Stock led chapel. So far, we have raised about $2,700 for Bethlehem’s “taking Jesus to the streets” weekly block parties they

are doing for the next 2 months. Thursday, we did Toga during P.E.. For art we are starting

a chalk pastel project.

 From Mrs. R:

Students had a surprise going up to the Science Lab and have guest teacher, Mrs. Crenshaw (7th grade), instruct them on dissecting worms.  I heard great things from her about this group's politeness and following directions.  They did great!

Week 29 Science Worm Lab

Ask your child about the worm lab they did in Science on Thursday!

The Passion of Jesus

In Religion, students have begun the walk through Holy Week with Jesus.  Did you know that 1/5 of the Gospel accounts are dedicated to this single week of Jesus' life?  Thursday we explored Palm Sunday and today Jesus "cleaning" the temple by driving out the money changers and merchants.  We saw how when Jesus humbly mounted a donkey to enter Jerusalem, he was a fulfillment of prophecy that boldly declared he was the promised Messiah.  Check out the Religion tab above for  more details.

Achievement Testing April 20-28  Zion will be holding achiement tests in April.  Please avoid scheduling appointments this week, if possible.

From Pastor Fieberkorn's chapel message - the cross of Christ ends the separation sin caused between God and man.

Week 28: 4th Quarter Begins

Report cards and AR Reports came home Friday.

The first week of 4th quarter is under our belts. I am so proud of your children and their hard work this year.  Tremendous growth is taking place!  Please contact me or Mrs. Donner (Science, English, Spelling) if you have any questions about your child's progress.
A word about AR. This year's Literature is a heavy genre study.  I know some parents have questions when they see the AOTS book level of their child's AR choices below a 6th grade level.  Literature class provides our instructional and challenging reading this year, which is why we maintain a 16 point AR goal and don't increase that.  AR is now intended for fun, enjoyable reads, and it's acceptable to read lower than a 6.0 AOTS level.  This is a shift from 4th and 5th grades, as novels were the bulk of the reading curriculum at those levels.  Remember, too, that the book level is only one gauge of the complexity of a read.  I conference with students about their book selections at the beginning of the quarter and encourage those who may need to stretch themselves to explore other genres or topic areas.

Looking forward to partnering with you in this final stretch!

Here's what's new:
Religion: Test up Monday on Jesus Ministry/True Man, True God. Then we begin the walk to the cross -
Jesus teaching and Passion Week
G Math: Unit Rate, Consumer Math- Better Buy, Percents
T Math: Ratios and how they are used

S.S.: Continuing unit on China with demographic data analysis and exploring world countries
Art: Cross Art - look for these to go on display in the back of church in a few weeks
Lit.: Novel Study: Blended continues

Week 27 End of 3rd Quarter

This week, the students have been working hard learning about

  • population data analysis and China
  • ratios in math
  • writing research papers, and using online web tools for research.
  • perspecitve drawing
We've seen JESUS as TRUE GOD and TRUE MAN by digging deeper into his miracles and parables.

We also dove into a new novel and how we can relate to characters in two ways: as a  MIRROR looking into our lives or as a WINDOW into an experience we've never had.  Check out the trailer for Blended  by Susan Draper.  It was a nominee for the Mark Twain award in 2020-21.   Difficult concepts like divorce and racial tension have led to good class discussions so far.

Today marked the end of 3rd quarter.  I am so proud of the students and their hard work this year!  Teachers are processing grades and report cards will be sent home on the Friday after Spring Break.    I'm excited to enter this fun spring time of learning and growing in our faith together!

  • Zion's Auction is tonight
  • Spring Ahead - Daylight Savings time starts this weekend!
  • Yearbooks on sale NOW through Friday, March 17
  • Bobcat Shuffle 5K run returns April 29      See Sycamore for details!

Week 26: Grandparents Day

From the class blogger:

By: Adam March 2, 2023

We did not do a lot throughout the week, but on Wednesday

we went to chapel and later in the day we went to the Scholastic

book fair, and got to see some of the new books. On Thursday

we went to 4th grade’s living wax museum, and saw all the

different famous Missourians. And on Friday we had

Grandparent’s Day so that we could have time with our relatives

and friends.

From Mrs. R

We had a wonderful visit with grandparents and special guests, even on this soggy day.  Games and activities were hopping across campus.  Our 7th graders led us is a special worship. Through drama and sign language we saw the importance of depending on God to provide for us despite the devil trying to pull us down.  It was a powerful reminder that Fear is a Liar, but the God of Truth tells us we are his  precious children.

Guests:  Thank you for taking the time to spend this important time with these kids.  These are the memories that will last!

 Disability Awareness Month

After our Helen Keller study in Literature, we took 4 days out this week to learn about disabilities.  Thanks to our guest speaker, Mrs. Preusser (Mrs. Donner's mom) we learned about hearing loss and her job teachiing with children as the learn to adapt to hearing aides and cochlear implants.  Kids simulated blindness, deafness, and learning disabilities this week to gain an appreciation and understand of other uniquely gifted, but challenged folks.

Want a good parenting read?  Check out Sibling Conflict.  (5 minute read)  From the Spark and Stitch Institute

Be sure to see the Sycamore email about AUCTION, YEARBOOKS and...

don't forgot to come Tuesday night for our PTL parenting night!  (I hate to miss it, but it's Emily's birthday.  I hope many of you will take advantage of this wonderful speaker).
