OOPS! I never clicked "publish" last week. The below info was in the email news.
From the class blogger: Lyla
This week was the start of the third quarter. In
art we did a winter based oil pastel drawing.
We kept it easy since it’s the first week back
from winter break. We did a cellular respiration
experiment in science class. We started a book called
Blended. This week was the start of basketball.
This was a great week!
Hi families! Happy New Year!
3rd quarter is off to a great start! Note that report card came home today. It’s a great time to celebrate hard work and set goals for success as we progress through the year.
Chapel offerings this month will go to the Global Kids Fund of Lutheran Hour Ministries for their mission in Mongolia. We will take part in their online mission at the end of the month during Lutheran Schools Week.
Often when we ask our kids, “How was school?” all we hear is “fine.” Here are a few of our current units that you can ask about:
Religion: John the Baptist, and Jesus’ Baptism
Math: GCF, LCM, Prime factorization
English: pronouns, proper and common nouns
Science: cellular respiration and cell division
Soc. Studies: Central America and Caribbean - building the Panama Canal
Literature: Novel unit: Blended by Sharon Draper.
.
We are deep into our novel Blended and have been exploring the world of a sixth grade girl adjusting to life with divorced parents (mom is white and dad is African American). In the midst of this turmoil, a noose is found in a locker after a history class on the Civil Rights Movement. We are discovering how literature can be a window into things we have never experienced, yet at the same time mirror our own lives. Next week we will look at primary sources showing the issue of discrimination and prejudice in the CRM and how people stood up for equality and fairness. As we continue to follow Izzy, we will explore how love and caring are stronger than hate and how God's love gives us the power to overcome even the worst in ourselves through His forgiveness and strength.
DATE TO NOTE: No School Monday 1/19 - MLK Day
Here are our cell projects from December!
