Week 19: What's happening in 6th grade?

We're back in the saddle and students have been eagerly working on many activities.  As we begin 3rd quarter, here's what's new in several of our subjects:

Religion - Heroes of the Old Testament.  This week we learned of Joshua, Deborah, and have begun Samson.  Students are getting in depth into the Samson they never knew: a fallen sinner whom God chose to use as his instrument.  Groups are creating presentations to teach his story to the class.  See the Religion tab above for more details

Social Studies - Monsoon Asia - this week we completed a mapping lab introducing this new part of the world.  We will begin a climate study next as we start chapter 27.

Literature - Drama!  We are exploring the literary form of a script as well as learning a lot about wordplay and humor in language with the play adaptation of a literary classic, The Phantom Tollbooth.

Art - Mrs. Murray is helping our class explore the concept of negative space and composition with an unusual symmetry picture.  We will also explore space and texture with an animal camouflage project in the weeks to come.

G Math  Our fraction study continues with ratios and proportions.  Thank you in advance for taking your child shopping to discover unit rates and the "better buy."  Frugal shoppers of the future!  Some students need a little help with rounding to the nearest cent.

T Math  - We are beginning our study of fractions.  You will see students using a Saxon 7/6 text for the next weeks (no book cover needed) as we review fraction concepts and a thorough look at all the operations of fractions.  We will return to the other text with the study of ratios later in the quarter.
