Mrs. Riemenschneider's Classroom: Week 29: Report Cards, Faiith Families, and Disability Awareness

On Friday Mrs. Laurie Preusser came in and taught us about hearing loss. She told us how she helped kids that could not hear that well. (She teaches kids as they get hearing aids/coclear implants) On Wednesday we had a faith family activity. We colored and decorated bags with stuff in them to give to foster kids. We thought it was very fun. Sincerely the class bloggers, Jake and Nick.

From Mrs. R:

Miss Davis began teaching some Religion classes and the T-Math class this week. She will continue these subjects and gradually add S.S., Lit, Art, and the G-Math class to have an opportunity to teach every subject. I am co-planning with Miss Davis and in the classroom while she teaches. As she teaches, I am able to work more one on one with students.

This week, we had a special opportunity to learn about disabilities after our Helen Keller study in Literature. Students simulated being blind, deaf, physically disabled, having ADD, and a variety of learning disabilities. We discussed how we are uniquely created by God and students reflected on the struggles of each challenge and how we can best be open and welcoming as a church community. It tied in well with studying Zaccheus in Religion. Check out this simple way to be welcoming to someone different than you from Bethesda Lutheran Communities.

Report cards and AR Reports come home today. I am so proud of your children and their hard work this year. Tremendous growth is taking place! Please contact me or Ms. Preusser (Science, English, Spelling) if you have any questions about their progress as we move into the final quarter of 6th grade. A word about AR. This year's Literature is a heavy genre study. I know some parents have questions when they see the AOTS book level of their child's AR choices below a 6th grade level. Literature class provides our instructional and challenging reading this year, which is why we maintain a 16 point AR goal and don't increase that. AR is now intended for fun, enjoyable reads, and it's acceptable to read lower than a 6.0 AOTS level. This is a shift from 4th and 5th grades, as novels were the bulk of the reading curriculum at those levels. Remember, too, that the book level is only one gauge of the complexity of a read. I conference again with each student about their book selections at the beginning of 4th quarter and encourage those who may need to stretch themselves to explore other genres or topic areas.

Faith Family Service Project

This week in Faith Families we had the opportunity to make a positive impact and share the love of Jesus with children in foster care right here in the St. Charles area.

We did a devotion on Matthew 28:35-40, Jesus tells us that when we help others it is like we are helping Him. We then learned about TOGETHER WE RISE -SWEET CASES service project. As a faith family we decorated and filled the sweet case duffel bags. We prayed for the child who will receive this bag. These bags will be delivered to local foster care agencies to be given to children in St. Charles. What opportunity to work together as a Family of Faith to make the children in foster care feel loved and give them something of their own.

We ended our Faith Family Chapel with the celebration of Baptisms for the months of March and April.

Lutheran High Basketball Programs

Sign-ups are now taking place for the Lutheran Jr. Cougar Boy’s and Girl’s Basketball Programs! This spring and summer, we will have programs for girls in incoming grades 5th through 8th and boys in incoming grades 3rd through 8th (for the Fall of 2019). An introductory meeting will be held at LHS on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 pm in the LHS library. To prepare for the summer season and to assess the group, we will hold “Skills and Drills” sessions March 25-29, April 1-5, & April 8-12. These sessions will be led by area trainers, as well as the LHS Head Coaches Doug Coleman and Erin Luttschwager, along with our LJCF Directors Mark Hoehner and Brandon Marolf.
