Congratulations to Alex for winning the classroom rounds of the Geography Bee.  He will represent our class on Tuesday.  Watch for information on livestreaming the Bee.

 Looking for a good read?

Mark Twain Nominated books are a great way to get AR points for the 3rd and 4th quarter. If your student reads 4 of these nominated books, they can actually vote for which books wins the award in our state. Contact your local library, and place some of these books on reserve. They chosen by librarians as some of the best new books.  I've read 7 so far and they are all good!

  Use the website for more info on specific books.  A few are available through Scholastic Book orders, too!  Book orders will be placed on Sunday.

Week 19: End of 2nd Quarter

 How exciting to finally see a little snowfall!   As I am typing this I am watching the white take over the lawn out back and I am reminded of a verse from Isaiah:

...Though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
    they shall become like wool.   Isaiah 1:18

How wonderful a reminder that all our sins have been washed away by the blood of Jesus.  All God sees when He looks at us is Christ's perfection!

End of 2nd Q

Students celebrate the halfway mark of 6th grade!  I am so proud of their hard work.  I see growth in so many ways.  Teachers are finalizing grades and report cards come home next Friday.  It is a good time to sit down with your child and ask of what they are most proud.  We are enjoying lessons on drama, fractions, adverbs, Asia, genetics and how the Holy Spirit works in our lives.  So much learning going on!

 Mrs. Donner had the students create a one word New Year's Resolution in English class.  Below are the words the 6th graders chose.  The kids put a lot of thought into their goals.  Ask your child to show you their project.  It's pretty motivating!

Please scroll down to last week's blog for reminders about the Family Fun Scavenger Hunt and Lutheran Schools week coming in 2 weeks!

 Book orders

I am sending the Book Order digital flyer for the month of January.  Not sure if the paper flyers have been phased out, but I wanted to be sure you had a chance to see new books available.  I will place orders on Sat. Jan 23 in the afternoon.

Week 18: Prayer for our nation

 Today in S.S. we took time out to discuss the events that occurred in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.  We used a PBS newscast from Wednesday evening and Scripture to explore the event and how we as Christians can respond.  Students were able to ask questions and express concerns.  Here are a few excerpts from the prayers the kids wrote:

Heavenly father, god of all authority please help America work this election out for good. Please help America have peace in the nearing months.

 Please help our nation to be healed. You are almighty. We apologize for our actions and choices on Wednesday.

We are sorry that this is happening. It is not right, and not what you made us for. Thank you, that through all of our bad deeds and shameful actions you always forgive us. Help us get through this hard time, and become a better person. Amen.

If you would like resources to help you discuss this event with your family, I would direct you to the Spark Institute and CommonsenseMedia.

2 of our new units:

*Drama in Literature - We performed a Native American folktale this week to give us a taste of reading scripts and staging.  Our unit will focus on the play The Phantom Tollbooth, based on the novel by Norton Juster.  A great read full of puns and figurative language!

*Monsoon Asia mapping lab in S.S - We used Google Earth to help us explore physical features of our new world region to explore, Monsoon Asia. In the next chapters, we will focus on the countries of Bangledesh (human-environment interaction), India (outsourcing and global interconnections), Japan and China (population and density issues as cultures adapt to changing needs).  We will also participate in the online mission to Mongolia for National Lutheran Schools week at the end of the month!

Happy New Year!

I hope you and your family have had a wonderful holiday season.  With a lot of hope for the new year, we can remember the words of the author of Hebrews:

(God) has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper;
    I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.  Hebrews 13: 5b-8

 Stay connected to God!  His faithfulness endures forever!

 Classes resume Wed. Jan 6 - See you then!!

Kids feeling a little bored?

       *Remind them of  Prodigy Math!  New challenge for today and tomorrow

      ** Have they finished their reading for AR - 65% of the class has reached their 16 point goal and 11 have reached 20 or more points (way to get those no homework coupons!)  Last day for taking AR tests is Monday, Jan 11.
