Week 19: A New Year!

From the class bloggers, Charlotte and Max

Merry (belated) Christmas and a Happy New Year! Because this is a two day week, we aren't to busy with schoolwork. In PE, we are playing a new game with sticks that have pads on the bottom. The equipment was donated by the American Heart Association. We are starting to study the Periodic table in Science, and we started learning about drama in literature. Even though we were disappointed to go back to school, it's fun to see our friends again and tell them about our break. Happy New Year!

From Mrs. R.

Happy 2018!  We came back to school to mild days and sleepy kids.   What a wonderful time to celebrate the Epiphany of our Lord, as the Good News of the Savior is manifested to all nations!  After exploring the Wisemen's story, we looked at the fictional account of The Other Wiseman by Henry Van Dike.  We learned about how worship of the Savior can take place by serving our neighbor.

FIELD TRIP UPDATE:  2 coming up soon!!

I have enough parent drivers for the Feb. 1 trip to Hidden Valley.  See the Hidden Valley website for more cold weather tips.  Remember this is an extended day for us 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

We have a trip to the Sheldon set for Jan. 24 to see The Science of Music.  This is a morning bus trip and we will return before our 12:35 lunch.  I am seeking one more parent to accompany us on this trip.  Detailed information to come home soon.

2 new units:

*Drama in Literature - We performed a Native American folktale today to give us a taste of reading scripts and staging.  Our unit will focus on the play The Phantom Tollbooth, based on the novel by Norton Juster.  A great read full of puns and figurative language!

*Monsoon Asia mapping lab in S.S - Students used ARC- GIS to work with on layering maps to analyze seismic activity around the world.  Thanks to a grant from Lindenwood University, I spent 2 Saturdays last fall learning this very cool technology.  Today we used Google Earth to help us explore physical features of our new world region to explore, Monsoon Asia. In the next chapters, we will focus on the countries of Bangledesh (human-environment interaction), India (outsourcing and global interconnections), Japan and China (population and density issues as cultures adapt to changing needs).  We will also participate in the online mission to Peru for National Lutheran Schools week at the end of the month!
