Ski Trip Friday -

Please note, it is looking colder for our Hidden Valley Trip.  Although 2 layers (long sleeve shirt,  sweatshirt) are good under your winter coat, be sure hands, heads, and feet are well covered.  Socks with a blend of wool are much warmer.  Snowpants, ski bibs, or a waterproof layer over leggings/long underwear/sweats etc. are better for legs.   Here are other tips for the cold.

Old Man Winter
Here are some tips on how to beat the old fellow at his own game, while you enjoy the great snow conditions that usually exist when it is cold.
You head is an escape valve for more than 50% of your body heat. Keep your head and ears covered by a warm cap. Remove metal earrings.
Your face should also be protected. Use lotion to give your face protection from the wind and sun. You’ll be amazed how much warmer and comfortable you’ll feel if your face is protected. In fact, protecting your face can make a big difference in how you feel and how much you enjoy the day. Sunglasses also help protect the face and keep eyes from watering.
Your hands may be better protected by mittens than gloves. Perhaps the most important thing to know is that the rope tow will be very hard on gloves. Consider putting a cheap pair of work gloves over your regular gloves.
Your feet will be warmer with wool socks. Cotton socks will soon be wet from snow and perspiration and not help keep the feet warm. If you can’t wear wool socks, bring a spare pair and switch at lunch time.
Pant legs should be loose enough to fit over the outside of your plastic ski boots. Denim is not a warm material. It gets wet easily and lets the wind through.  Ski bibs, snow pants, or a waterproof/quick drying outer layer are helpful.
Wear as many layers as you can. When you bend over, be sure you don’t come untucked at the waist. Loose clothing assists circulation.  If the day warms up you can always remove a layer or two for comfort. Bring a light outer jacket or coat that you can wear all day. Your rope tow pass will be attached to it. Snowmobile suits generally don’t work well for skiing.
