Red Ribbon Week

Students have enjoyed celebrating the healthy bodies God has given us and learning more about preventing drug abuse.  Highlights of the week included special morning announcements by Student Council and planning and decorating our door.  Student recalled a lot from their 5th grade D.A.R.E. experience, yet were still amazed by some of the facts presented by our STUCO.  Kudos for a job well done!

Hark - The Students Lead Advent Worship!

On Wednesday, December 5, at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m, grades 5 and 6 will lead the first Advent worship services at Zion Church.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our students as they help our congregation prepare for the Lord's coming.  Attendance is expected at both services, so please mark your calendars now and keep the date open.  We are beginning preparations now for leading worship especially since these services are scheduled for the first week of December.

During the coming weeks, all students will learn songs selected to reinforce their message.  Students will also have opportunities to try various roles in the service, such as special drama or music parts.  Part of our Memory Work assignments will shift focus to learning songs and lines.  Students will also have an opportunity to share their special musical talents.  Any student who has had two years of music lessons or is in the Concert Band may offer to play for the services.  Selections must be:
     1)  sacred music related to the Advent or Christmas seasons of the church year
     2)  practiced and ready to audition before Thanksgiving break – Tuesday, Nov. 13

STUDENTS:  Lost your song sheet or script?  Go to our Zion Classroom webpage to download a new copy.

Field Trip - November 26  Weldon Springs and Bowling

Sixth graders will have our first field trip on Monday, Nov. 26.  NOTE - this is the first day back from Thanksgiving Break!!

For the morning, we will travel to Weldon Springs Interpretive Center to learn about radiation, environmental clean up, and the history of the disposal cell there.  This ties into our geography study of the impact of humans on the environment.

For the afternoon, we will head to St. Charles Lanes to try our hand at bowling.  This is a unique PE experience we can not provide on site at Zion.

We are seeking a few parent chaperones from 9:15 until the end of the school day. Also note, this will be a cold lunch day.  Permissions slips with further details will come home AND NEED TO BE RETURNED the week before Thanksgiving.

Characterization Through Drama

 by Evelyn S., class blogger

This week in Literature we read a story called Dragon Dragon. It was a fantasy tale that was kind of like a folk tale in my opinion. It was about a dragon who ravaged the country side with pranks more then damage. So to teach us about body language and character traits, we made the short story into a play.  It was divided into the three sections: the conflict, rising action, and climax. Our class made the play funny and entertaining. We brought in props and we were really creative.

This week in P.E. ...

by Julian P., class blogger

This week was fun in gym. This week we played a game called big base. The way the game is played is you have two teams: one team on the outer field and the other team by the mats. In the gym there are three bases. You need to hit the ball really hard then you run the bases but if you get hit with the ball or if the other team cetches the ball twice the two teams switch sides. That is our blog this week on our Zion 6R blog.

Parent Teacher Conferences

...in 2 weeks- October 18

Your child should hand you a parent teacher conference form indicating our schedule time today.  Please either return the bottom portion of the form on Monday, or email me to confirm your time.

To the right is a quick survey to help me plan our time together.  Take some time to talk with your child and respond to the questions.  Mr. Braddy and I will both be looking at the comments, so feel free to share thoughts about Math and Science as well.  I feel so blessed to be part of your child's education and I am eager to team with you as we set goals for the rest of 6th grade!

School pictures are this Thursday.  Students who did not have pictures taken in July had an order form come home on Friday.  If you desire retakes, contact the office.

Walkathon

We had a glorious afternoon for the Walkathon Friday.  Students put a lot of effort into the walk and the fellowship with one another.  Teachers hosted the "Watering Hole", the "Snack Shack", and a cool down with the watergun.  Mrs. Schenck from Lutheran High handed out prizes to random walkers.  Together we had a blast as we learn to Shine Like Stars - Reflecting HIS Light!

Now we ask students to finish collecting donations this week and return monies collected by this Friday, 10/5.  These funds will be used to purchase sling bags for our school care kits and some of the supplies.  Watch for our supplies drive to come in November during Phase 2 of our Service Project.
