Week 7: WALKATHON!!

From our class bloggers, Ellie and Katelyn:

This week has been a great week. On Wednesday was the Tina Meier Presentation. It was really sad, and got some people to cry. Everyone was devastated on how it all happened. We got the chance to ask a few questions and all of them were helpful. After that we had a fun hula hoop game to start off our last P.E. day. Everyone liked it. For 2nd Step we had a chance to split the boys and girls to talk about the Tina Meier Presentation. Everyone bonded on some way. On Friday we have a walk-a-thon. We hope we raised a lot of money. We also had fun watching the 8th grade rocket launch followed by a 10 minute extra recess.

From Mrs. R.

The Walkathon was a wonderful showing of support for the WILL foundation in China and Christian Friends of New Americans.  Please keep these organizations in your prayers as we gather pledges and send them off.  Please return pledge sheets with funds collected this week.

Monday:  Metro Theatre will be here for a production of Frida Libre.   Here's the synopsis:

Inspired by the childhood of legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Frida Libre
is the uplifting story of young Frida who

plans to become a doctor and her new

friend Alex who secretly wishes to be a

wrestler. Thrown together on a science

project about metamorphosis, the two

go on a delightful journey in this

musical performance that features

original songs and explores the

meaning of transformation, bravery,

understanding and acceptance.

-->
-->A.R. Tests need to be completed by Monday, Oct. 8 - the last day for testing.
 Bobcat Shuffle sign ups continue - but if you register by Monday, Oct. 1 you are guaranteed a shirt and just may win our class a Donut Day!

-->
 TRUNK or TREAT - Earlier registration deadline is also October 1.  Not planning to park?  You can donate candy for the event.  Please drop it off in the school office next week.

One take away for the parents from Tina Meier - listen to your child.  Though you may know that this is a phase and they will grow out of it, their emotions are real and they need validation.  Thanks to so many parents for coming.  We continued the conversation as a circle of boys and a circles of girls in 2nd Step the following day.  A few of Tina's slides:

"there's a difference between being funny, and goofy, and joking and having fun AND taking it out on someone else"

Strategies for standing up for oneself:
Stand tall, strong voice, eye contact (not look down, sideways, etc)
Practice (for real) in a mirror. We call this Assertive communication in 2nd Step

 Thanks to Charlotte and friends for many of our 8th grade rocket launch and walkathon photos:
