Week 3: Faith Families and 2nd Step

From the class bloggers, Hannah and Chloey

This week has been exciting because we did so many new things, but sadly we had a lot of people sick. We also had a lot of fun in Second Step, and learning about friendship.  We have gotten closer to God week by week.  Second Step has been teaching us about middle school and all you can do in it. This has also been a very exciting week because it was the first week of faith families. We can't wait until next week, a new week to learn and have fun in September.

FAITH FAMILIES:  Today was our first week sitting in Chapel with our Faith Family.   This is a group of students from all grades 1-8 and a teacher.  We build relationships through chapel, activities, service, and prayer.  This week we had our first faith family activity.  Our devotion was about being God’s postage stamp. We each must GO and deliver the Good News of Jesus.   We spent time writing what we could say to tell others about Jesus on paper.  These papers will be used in a piece of art that will  remind us to GO and TELL.  We used toilet paper squares to help get to know each other a little and then returned to chapel to celebrate Baptismal Remembrance for July, August, and September.

Week 2:

From the class blogger, Chloey and Ellie:

The first full week of 6th Grade was so FUN and we learned so much.  We did cool activities, like art, projects, and more!  Lunch was very tasty and yummy.  We met new class mates, and they were all very nice.  The teachers were very kind and fun to all the kids. 6th grade is so fun we all can't wait till next week!

From Mrs. R:

A big thank you to all of the parents who attended on Back to School night.  Do not hesitate to contact me throughout the year with any questions.

Student now have over a full week under their belts and a sense of how classes and transitions go.  We are getting better at routines, travel, and organization with fewer reminders. Students are learning how to think first of others (pushing in chairs, waiting turns in the hall). We also welcomed Mrs. Carol Martin, one of the founders of Moms In Prayer, to teach about praying scripturally, using Bible verses as a starting point.  Students are writing prayers for the PA announcements.

       First units:

Week 1: A New Year!

I am so excited to have your children as my students this year. Our school theme gives a wonderful focus for our year:

Mark 16:15  And he said,"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation."

This year through our theme, we will explore how God calls us to spread the message of salvation to everyone, near and far.  Students started in day one devotions grabbing an everyday object out of a bag and as a group creating a witness opportunity around it (pizza anyone?).  Yesterday we started breaking down our theme song into key phrases that show what "going out to every nation" involves,  looking for a Bible character as a model of "walking in the light", showing "peace and justice" or "forgiveness."

Wednesday, we had a wonderful chapel message from Zion alum, Angie Steinbacher,. She reminded students that we are missionaries right now - in our home, school, and community.  Zion is sponsoring Angie with our chapel offerings this year in her teaching ministry in Asia.  (I'll share more at Back to School Night).  I pray this school year gives you a renewed opportunity to grow in your faith: as a parent, as a student, and as a family.

I am eager to partner with you in both educating and nurturing your child this year. I encourage families to talk about lessons we learn, especially memory verses and Religion lessons. I look forward to seeing you in worship at Zion or hearing about your worship experiences at your home church as our class grows together in our faith walk.

What's New in Grade 6?

One of my big goals in 6th grade is for students to become more independent in their learning. This news blog will update you on current happenings, but in 6th grade I no longer publish spelling words, memory assignments, or tests.  These are things your child will be tracking in their assignment book.  If an individual student needs more organizational help, I will work one-on-one with that student.  I plan to publish this blog weekly on Fridays. (In reality, it may be Saturday mornings some weeks!)

  Sycamore!!!

You should have received a login for Sycamore Education from Mrs. Schmidt.  This is your access to school news. This will also be how you access your child's grades.  Please click around, and ASK QUESTIONS if you are confused.

Book orders
Scholastic book orders came home today.  These are a great way to see what's new for kids - but please note not all books may be appropriate for your child.  (Go to my WEBSITES tab above and click the Commonsensemedia.org for book reviews).

You may place orders by next Friday.  The link is on the right and our class code is GV2FP.
