Week 38: And you shall be my witnesses....

What does Christ's command to his disciples mean to a sixth grader?  (Mt. 28:19-20, Acts 1:8)  This is the topic we explored in our religion classes as we have looked at the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and early church. As the disciples were instructed to witness in first Jerusalem, then to the neighboring countryside, then to the ends of the earth, we Christians are encouraged to be witnesses where we are at: in our school, workplaces, and families then reach out, even to the ends of the earth.   Where do we get equipped for such a task?  In Word and Sacrament - with the fellowship of believers.
In our last weeks, students had opportunities to learn of the witness of the early disciples.  We researched online devotion to share where students can stay connected to God's Word over the summer. (Check out my website tab above - diigo - My Groups - Mrs. R's Religion and Devotion sites) If you have gotten out of the habit of worship or devotional time with God - this is an opportunity for you, too, to be enriched by the Holy Spirit.  I encourage you to be involved in summer worship both at home and in your travels.   Invite a friend or neighbor to our Vacation Bible School the week of June 10.  We, too, have the power of the Holy Spirit and can look for those opportunities for God to use us to spread his word!

                Zion's Summer Worship Schedule:
                 Saturday Worship:  5 PM
                 Sunday Worship:  8, 10:30 AM
                 Bible Class:  9:30 - 10:15AM
                 Sunday School:  9:30 - 10:15 AM
Monday Worship:  7:00 PM (starting in June)

In our final Religion class we looked at Paul's good advice to Timothy as a faithful young person.  Remember to “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”  from I Peter 3:15.  To be equipped for the task, students have been challenged to get INTO THE WORD:  to add a regular devotion time to their routine this summer. Please pray for the continued spiritual growth of our class beyond these walls!
Dear families:
Thank you for all of your support and partnership this year.  I have appreciated your prayers, your notes of encouragement, your time working with your child on projects, and your child.  It has been a pleasure being a part of your lives this year.  May God bless your family this summer!

                  In His Service,

Week 37: Field Day

We had a beautiful afternoon for field day!  After a pizza picnic lunch, kids traveled through 8 stations of games, STEM, and art to enjoy fellowship with their 1-8th grade buddies.  We returned to chapel to worship with some VBS songs and see a video of our service projects from this past year.  It's been wonderful to see the students build relationships across grade levels.  When we were just at the primary kids musical last week, the sixth graders were pointing out their buddies, waving, and celebrating the great jobs they were doing.  For years to come, kids will see each other  around school and wave or run to give a hug.  What a great model of the body of Christ - we are a family of believers here to help each other through life and celebrate together all that God does for us!

Week 36: Field Trip Fun!!

God blessed us with a dry day and a sunny afternoon.  The MO Vietnam Wall Replica was a powerful part of our day and the students got to see a beautiful way to honor our military.  Plans are to expand the site over the next 5-7 years.  I highly recommend a trip there.
Our Lutheran historians were wonderful storytellers who made the history of the Saxon immigrants come to life for us.  How amazing to see God's care for his people despite many hardships.  Students also enjoyed making pizzas that were baked in the brick oven for us.  We tried a few typical chores, and of course the kids favorite play time and social time on the bus!  Thanks to the parents who chaperoned and helped make the day run smoothly.  Thanks to PTL for sponsoring our comfy bus - we rode in style!

Photos from our trip are all mixed up below.  We first were at the MO Veteran's Memorial in Perryville where we saw a video, learned the stories of several people memorialized on the wall, and got to research a vet and find their name on the wall.  Then we drove another 30 minutes to Altenburg where we toured Trinity Lutheran Church (c.1867) and the log cabin that had been the first seminary.  We looked at artifacts in the museum.  Finally we headed to Saxon Memorial where we made lunch and learned about the homestead.   Parents - if you have any good photos, especially of groups, I'd love to share them!
Dates to remember:
Thurs. May 16  PAJAMA DAY!  Students may wear school appropriate pajamas to help celebrate the birthday of our wonderful cafeteria worker, Julia!
Friday May 17,  Faith Family Field Day
We will eat a picnic lunch, play games, and have one last fun time with our Faith Families!  Zion will be providing cheese pizza from Domino's, goldfish and water for the picnic lunch.  If your child does not want that lunch or is unable to eat that lunch due to allergies, please have your child bring a cold lunch on Friday, May 17th.  Your child will also be spending the afternoon out in the sun, so please apply sunscreen in the morning before your child comes to school.  This will also be a SPECIAL SPIRIT DAY your child may wear a Zion/LHS t-shirt and non uniform bottoms!

NO HOT LUNCH - The last week of school, students will need to pack a cold lunch.  Mrs. Boettcher will have some goodies for sale as we clean out the kitchen for the summer.
