Week 18: Merry Christmas!!

It's been a fast paced week, with several tests, visiting classes to read our Christmas picture books, watching  The Nativity Story in Religion, The Phantom Tollbooth in Literature. and a bit of fun mixed in - ask your kids about the Elf breakout and the card game called Trash.  Today we had a special Christmas worship led by the 8th grade and Kindergarten focusing on the joy of the shepherds sharing the Good news of Jesus -  the birth of our Savior is such important news it must be shared!!  Ask about the courtroom chancel drama today.

THANKS ROOM PARENTS for the great food and fun at our party!  The kids had a blast.

I an overwhelmed by your generosity.  Thank you for all the gifts and goodies!   I pray you and your family are able to have a restful and worshipful holiday.  Jesus came to bring peace, love, and joy.  May we reflect the wonder of knowing He saves us!

Merry Christmas!

English - Story Writing

Miss Dubberke had the English classes write children's picture books with a Christmas theme as part of their unit on writing mechanics and punctuation.  Students then published their books and read them at other classrooms around the campus.  Check out these fun tales!  (hint - you may need to "sign in" or create and account.  Then if it says 0 books, use the drop down arrow and slide tool)  6th grade Books

Week 17 Breeze Park caroling

From the class blogger:

This week on Tuesday we had a shared gym class, and got to act out at the

end of the Phantom Tollbooth. On Wednesday we got to enjoy the 1st and

2nd grade advent service and enjoy all the hard work they put into it. On

Friday we got to go to the nursing home to meet our pen pals, which was

a lot of fun. We also got to work on our cell projects which are really

turning out very nice. I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

The Phatom Tollbooth

From Mrs. R

Oh how I wish you could have seen your kids today!  We quickly got over our nervousness and had a wonderful time singing and meeting new people.  The kids were friendly, inquisitive, and had some good conversations.  A few of them met their pen pals, too! The workers were gracious and took kids to meet a few pals who were in their rooms.  Others in independent living that could not attend will get our special gifts delivered.  HUGE thanks to Mrs. Crumrine and her brother who helped lead the nging and the moms who completely took over "hosting" the goodies we brought to share.

Photos are limited as we do not have permission to take photos of the residents.  We look forward to finding more ways to touch the lives of these special people.  I encouraged the kids to continue these types of chats with their own senior relatives, too!

Week 16 (12/9) Christmas Art dispaly

We've had a busy week finishing Christmas art, beginning cell projects, reading The Phantom Tollbooth as a drama in Lit, and making plans for our pen Breeze Park visit.

We passed the midquarter last Monday.  It's a good time to ask your child to show you their weekly papers, ask what they are most proud of, ask what their goals are for the rest of the quarter.  2nd quarter officially ends on Jan. 5, but with Christmas break, we are having a lot of end of the chapter tests this week and next.  Remember Sycamore may still have "missing" for absent work until teachers finish processing grades.  Encourage your child to check in with EACH teachers after an absence.  Our daily assignment doc shows the basics, but their may be notes to copy or lessons to meet about.

Reminder: Friday is our field trip to Breeze Park.  We leave after lunch.  Students wear uniform bottoms with Zion red or a Christmas top.  Scroll down to last week for other upcoming events.

Enjoy the weekend!  Mrs. R

Week 15 (12/2): What's happening in 6R?

What an amazing time we had serving God and leading worship this week!!  I am so proud of these young people and all the roles they took - art, costuming, musicians, choir, helping each other memorize songs.  It was truly a team effort!  Thanks to all who were able to attend our worship this week.  We pray the message helps your focus this season.  It was a wonderful celebration!  Our class has been using an Advent trivia calendar, Advent wreath, and devotions to help continue this season of reflection in our classroom.

What's happening in 6th grade:

Is the conversation at your house like mine?  "How was school?"  "Fine."  "What did you do today?" "Nothing."  Getting middle schoolers to share is tough.  Here's what's been happening in our subjects:

Religion - A visit with Pastor Fieberkorn to see our sanctuary and the O.T. tabernacle

Math - All about 3D shapes and surface area.  Ask your child what a "net" is!

English - Punctuation and the use of commas - treasure hunt style!

Science - Plant and Animal Cells

S.S. - North America geography and our countries today - researching advantages/disadvantages of energy sources

Art - Christmas Canvas project
