Report cards and AR Reports came home TODAY

I am so proud of your children and their hard work this year.  Tremendous growth is taking place!  Please contact me or Mrs. Donner (Science, English, Spelling) if you have any questions about your child's progress as we move into the final quarter of 6th grade.

A word about AR. This year's Literature is a heavy genre study.  I know some parents have questions when they see the AOTS book level of their child's AR choices below a 6th grade level.  Literature class provides our instructional and challenging reading this year, which is why we maintain a 16 point AR goal and don't increase that.  AR is now intended for fun, enjoyable reads, and it's acceptable to read lower than a 6.0 AOTS level.  This is a shift from 4th and 5th grades, as novels were the bulk of the reading curriculum at those levels.  Remember, too, that the book level is only one gauge of the complexity of a read.  I conference again with each student about their book selections at the beginning of 4th quarter and encourage those who may need to stretch themselves to explore other genres or topic areas.

Looking forward to partnering with you in this final stretch!

Here's what's new:
Religion: The walk to the cross - Jesus' teachings and Passion Week
English: 1st draft of the research paper due Wednesday
G Math: Tested on percents (integers, rational numbers, and disabilities)
T Math: Tested on Ch. 4 and all Fraction operations
Next up: Combining the math groups for Integers and the coordinate plane to hit key
concepts dealing with positive and negative numbers!!
(T-math will then pick up Ch. 5 on ratios and percents)
S.S.: Finished our study of Japan and population density with presentations on different parts of
Japanese culture. Moving to our next world region: EUROPE and RUSSIA
Science: Circulatory system
Art: Japanese windballs
Lit.: Poetry!!

Week 29: End of 3rd Quarter

This week, the students have been working hard on learning about population data analysis, diet and nutrition, percents, dividing fractions, beginning research papers, and using online web tools for research.  We dove into poetry with a look at childhood favorites (Seuss, Silverstein, nursery rhymes) and classics (Edgar Allen Poe, Maya Angelou, and Lewis Carroll).  We've seen JESUS as TRUE GOD and TRUE MAN by digging deeper into his miracles and parables.  Now we are ready to start the walk to the cross.  Busy times in 6R!

Friday marked the end of 3rd quarter.  I am so proud of the students and their hard work this year!  Teachers are processing grades and report cards will be sent home on Friday.

Achievement Tests begin Thursday and run into the next week.  I told students that not only are these tests a way to celebrate their strengths and identify areas for individual growth, but they are also a way for Zion to check how well we are teaching them.  Encourage your child to get good rest and eat breakfast each day.  If you would like to contribute to a snack for our testing days, please see this sign up. Achievement Test Snacks Achievement tests are digital again this year.

Former student or parent of Mrs. Beaty?  We celebrate the ministry of our beloved 8th grade teacher and ask if you have any special memories to please share.  Please help us spread the word to others who have been blessed by her teaching.

Online Auction begins Sunday at 1:00 p.m!  Don't forget to tune into the live event on Friday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.

Week 28: Disability Awareness

  From the class bloggers:

3/12/21         By: Max and Yuan

Today we listened to Laurie Pruesser, who works at a school for the deaf.

The school she works at doesn’t teach kids sign language they teach them

to speak. Her job is to do home visits to teach kids how to speak. If the child

hasn’t gone fully deaf she teaches parents how to put on hearing aids on the

child. She taught us that there are different levels of hearing problems. Mild,

Moderate, severe, and profound.  She also taught us that there are three types

of hearing devices that will help improve hearing, a hearing aid, a cochlear

 implant, and bone conduction hearing.

A big thank you to Mrs. Pruesser (Mrs. Donner's mom) for spending time

with our class on Zoom today!

From Mrs. R

This week, we had a special opportunity to learn about disabilities after our Helen Keller study in Literature.  Students simulated being blind, deaf, dyslexic, and on Monday we will try ADD, and a variety of other disabilities.  We discussed how we are uniquely created by God and students reflected on the struggles of each challenge and how we can best be open and welcoming as a church community.   Check out this wonderful message from Bethesda Lutheran Communities of how we are all made in God' image.

REMINDERS and NEWS-

3rd quarter ends Friday, March 19.  AR tests may still be taken on Monday.

March 25th-April 1st: Achievement Tests  - Please, work to protect these dates in your home calendar.

Zion Auction - March 21-26

Our auction has gone virtual this year and is just over 1 week away!  This is our biggest PTL fundraiser and our hope is to use the profits to convert Mrs. Crenshaw's 7th grade homeroom into a Science Lab. See the Auction flyer for more info.  You can preview items and register.

8th Grade Passion Projects

Zion 8th graders are a year long Passion Project in which the students create or support a topic/cause that they are passionate about. Two of the girls are collecting donation items for their projects and have decided to work together.

One 8th grader is collecting donations to donate to animal shelters in need. She wants to be able to help the shelters who have less supplies. Our second 8th grader is collecting items to give to kids with cancer. Her passion project is inspired by a girl named Ebony, a family friend, who sadly passed away from cancer. She and her mom decided to give items to kids with cancer to help them “keep smiling.” When Ebony passed away her mom carried on collecting items to donate. She wants to do the same thing but donate to our local hospitals. Look for boxes in the main parts of the church and school where you may drop off donations. Please label donations with your child's class name for a freindly competition. Wish lists
Thank you for your help,

Such a busy week, we did not get pictures taken!  Highlights:

  • watching Jesus miracles from the Visual Bible, Matthew and creating our own minibook summary
  • collaborative groups reviewing Non-Fiction articles
  • double Art period working on our perspective rooms
  • "shopping" online looking for better buys and calculating annual savings,
  • Raisin Bran lab in Science
  • reading lots of postcards from Lutheran schools around the nation
  • filming "A day in 6th grade" for our grandparents and special friends

We hope to have our video out soon for you to share with our loved ones since Grandparents day did not happen this year!

Praise God from whom all Blessings flow! - From Mrs. Steinbacher

Thank you, Zion students, families, and teachers, for the incredible job you did raising money for the American Heart Association. Your generosity is overwhelming! Together we have raised over Twenty-two thousand six hundred dollars ($22,600.00) for this worthy cause once again breaking out previous year’s record. Thank you for every donation from five dollars to five hundred dollars. We couldn’t have raised this much without everyone helping out. A special shout out goes to our top fundraisers- #1 William L. ($2,360), #2 Autumn G. ($1,140), #3 Ella Grace E. ($1,000), and #4 Mrs. Ford ($518).

FYI- The larger thank-you gifts should arrive around Easter.

Here’s another reason why I am thankful for our Zion family-

Covid has changed numerous things about our school year, but one change that I have enjoyed experiencing is being outside during morning drop off. I have truly enjoyed hearing both parents and students share their expressions of love for each other as students exit their cars and head into school. It is obvious to me that our students know that they are loved by their parents/grandparents and by their Heavenly Father. What a Blessing and what a great way to start the day!

Serving Him,

Mrs. Steinbacher
