Week 26 (2/23) Happenings

 From the class blogger:

This week in sixth grade we finished up our water color island art project, and started our zentangle art. We also finished up our endangered species presentations. On Thursday we had a ventriloquist come and do a little show, and at the end of the day we sent our girls and boys varsity basketball teams and the cheerleaders to state in Jefferson City. Wish them luck! We were even introduced to our new English project, a research paper. This is going to be our biggest project and it will take about 7 weeks. Don’t forget we have our Grandparent and Special Friend Day coming up on March 8! Have a good day.

Week 25: Lent begins

For it is by GRACE you have been saved through faith and this is not from yourselves it is a gift of God, not a result of works so that no one can boast.  Ephesians 2:8-9

Lent began this week with Ash Wednesday.  In our memory study of the Lord's prayer we see how God cares for our every need.  Our class devotion time now will focus on Christ's amazing love for us -  that he would come to this earth and take our sins on the cross. During Lent I try to recommit myself to personal devotions and prayer.  This is a time to focus on Jesus and His great love for us.  Jesus gave His life so that I can live.  See the amazing artwork below that Pastor Rouland shared with us during chapel this week.

Instead of giving something up for Lent, I challenge my students and you to try doing the opposite and add something ... maybe commit to Wednesday night church, attend Sunday School, be a prayer partner with a classmate, do personal devotions, do family devotions, or make weekend worship a priority in their family.

I know your faith life will be strengthened.

 From the class bloggers:

On Monday we had a religion test. On Tuesday we played pillow polo in PE.  Also on Tuesday the girls basketball team won vs Immanuel 22 to 9. On Wednesday there was a chapel. It was Valentine's day and Ash Wednesday so we got crosses from the palm branches ashes on our forehead.  On Thursday there is also PE again. And after school there is picture day for Yearbook pictures. And on Friday there is NO SCHOOL! Also on Monday it’s president’s day so also No SCHOOL! That’s a four day weekend.

Week 24 (2/11) Kids' Heart Challenge

Kids had a great time rope jumping, shooting hoops, and running an obstacle course as we raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association.  Thanks to the generous support of Zion, family, and friends we are over $20,000 raised for heart research already!! Donations may still be made online.

Special guest art teacher!

We welcomed Laina's mom who came to teach art on Friday.  Mrs. M introduced us to different watercolor techniques and has inspired the students to create their own Identity Islands.  I look forward to seeing their creativity as they start their projects!

No School  Friday 2/16 and Presidents Day 2/19   (It will be a great weekend to finish a book!)

I encourage all families to send a parent on Thursday 2/22 to learn more about digital safety for our kids.  Check it out!

Week 23 FINALLY a full week!

It's been a busy five day week!  One of the blessings I have is being able to walk through Scripture with your child.  We are exploring the time period when Israel rejected God's leadership and asked for a king to be like all the other nations.  Here's blurb from Enduring Faith, our Religion series:

Not surprisingly, the first three kings of Israel—Saul, David, and Solomon—have moments of greatness and moments of great weakness. Each of these kings started out ruling faithfully, but along the way, each lost sight of God’s will and direction. Eventually, their reigns ended because they allowed sin and unfaithfulness to rule their lives. Even David, a man after God’s own heart, brought great trouble on his kingdom and family because of his sin.

Students face the same challenges. When at school, they have a support network of Christian adults and peers to help keep them focused on the Lord. But the sinful world around them desires to tear them away from their Lord and Savior. As a parent, you can provide your children with the skills and tools they need to keep Christ as ruler in their lives.

I encourage you to share your stories of temptation and God's forgiveness in your conversations with your children.  Share special Bible verses that give you strength and courage.  Help them know that they are God's forgiven children and God can use them to show His love to others and spread the gospel.

What's happening in 6th grade?

Religion- The anointing of Saul and David - we are looking at how God uses us to serve others, right now, not just when we are adults

Math - GMath finished the unit test and will move into ratios

TMath is reviewing basic +/- of fractions and how LCM and GCF are used to find equivalents and  simplest form before we do a unit test.

Both classes will take a mid-year diagnostic to help guide instruction

Social Studies - We will move to Australia and Oceania to now see the physical geography of where the Online Mission took us

English - prepositions!

Science - DNA, cell processes and functions

Art - One point perspective: Drawing a room

VALENTINES DAY - We'll have snacks and a game for our party on Feb. 14.   Passing out Valentines is optional, but please - no candy.
