Week 11: Happy Reformation!

Enjoy listening to the strings in chapel:

The Luther Seal: Summary of the Gospel - Lutheran Reformation
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 theses on the local church "bulletin board" calling people to debate the truth of the Bible and how the church had strayed from that truth.  Our class is learning about Luther's life as well as the amazing discovery he made:  WE ARE SAVED BY GOD'S GRACE  - not by good works or money or penance.  This led to a reform of the church and the creation of Protestant churches around the world.

We are reading a biography of Luther written as if Luther visited

sixth  graders at a Lutheran school and ate lunch with them for the week, modeled after the Table Talks Luther actually had with students for much of his life.  We are also using clips from the Luther Movie made in 2003.  Though there are some fictional details added, the heart of the movie shows Luther's struggle to understand God and share with the world about God's love.  (Note if you watch- the movie is PG-13 for some violence and language.  Sections for class have been selected as appropriate for students and our study.)  Check our our modern "social media" FLIPGRIDS that students used to spread Scripture that refutes the false teaching of Luther's day.

We will wrap up our Reformation in the following week as we examine Luther's motto: Grace Alone,  Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, Christ Alone.  Pastor Fieberkorn gave us a great overview in chapel!

Field Trip Nov. 17 - I am still seeking 1 or 2 more drivers for the Wolf Sanctuary.  Permission slips will come home on Monday.  Please email me if you are able to drive.  We will be gone from 8:15-11:30 or so.

Great Wolf Sanctuary Field Trip

6th Grade is going on another field trip! On Friday, November 17, we will be

headed to the Endangered Wolf Center in Eureka, MO. This trip will be quicker

than the last one, as it will only be a half day trip. We will depart from campus

around 8:15 and arrive at the center around 8:45. The tour and investigation

will run about 2 hours long, so we will be back at Zion around 11:30. This allows

us to have time in the afternoon to practice for our upcoming Advent Service.

We are on the hunt for field trip drivers! If you would like to volunteer to

drive for this trip, please let Mrs. R or Miss D know, along with how many

students you can fit in your car! You will need to havea current background

check.  We appreciate all of your help, as we could not do this without you.

If you did not drive for the last field trip and would like to drive for this one,

you will be our first pick! We want to give all our parents a chance to go on a

6th grade field trip if you want to. Thank you again!

On Wednesday, November 29  at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m, grades 5 and 6 will lead the

first Advent worship services at Zion Church.  This is a wonderful opportunity for

our students as they help our congregation prepare for the Lord's coming.

Attendance is expected at both services,  so please mark your calendars now and keep the date open.  Let me know of any

conflicts right away as parts will be assigned soon. We are eager to begin preparations

for leading worship as Advent will be here before we know it.

During the coming weeks, all students will learn songs selected to reinforce their

message.  Students will also have opportunities to try various roles in the service,

such as special drama, music, or “behind the scenes” parts.  Part of our Memory

Work assignments will shift focus to learning songs and lines.  Students who play

instruments will also have an opportunity to share their special musical talents.

Please note:

1.       Students must be taking weekly lessons with a private instructor

2.       Students must not be beginners – they should already be fairly accomplished at their

instruments

3.       Music should be from religious Advent or Christmas repertoire

4.       Students should speak with their private lesson teacher about choosing a piece

5.    Pieces must be PRACTICED and students be prepared to audition the second week of

November.

Other News:
  • . Parent Conferences 10/26 (no school) Please fill out this survey in the next week to help me prepare for our conference time.  Need to sign up for a conference time?  See Andrea's email from last week.
  • No school 10/27 (Fall Break Day)
  • It's a great weekend to READ.  Many students need to complete their AR goal of 16 points.  Students may take tests at school Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday as we wrap up the quarter.
  • The junior high will be implementing the tool, GoGuardian, as an extra security measure on our school’s laptop devices. GoGuardian allows teachers to monitor their students’ computer use in a safe and effective way. This tool will also help students stay on task during class and use Zion’s devices properly. GoGuardian will only be used during school days from 7:30am-3:30pm and will be disabled at all other times. We encourage you to talk about the importance of being safe online with your child at home. This is something we discuss often here at Zion and want to instill good online habits now before they enter high school. Here is the web page with more info (scroll down). Please let me know if you have any questions.

Week 8 (10/7) Field Trip Fun!

From the class blogger:

This week we have our 1st  field trip to weldon springs and harvest lanes.

We also had an English test and t math had a quiz. Zion’s soccer teams

had games last night and varsity won their game  2 to 1 or 3 to 1 and the

JV  lost their game  5 to 3. And we played kickball in gym class. It was

very fun. We also started an art project with puzzle pices. We did a thing in

computer lab where we acted like AI and played a drawing game. Me and

my friend Mason.c were on a team in bowling named … Poseidon. James J.

From Mrs. R.

We had a terrific field trip today and God blessed us with beautiful  chilly weather!  The students learned about local history, how to take water samples in an aquifer, and worked in groups to analyze maps for the best location for a military supply plant based on various needs and concerns.  We had TONS of fun bowling, too.  A special thanks our parent chaperones for taking their day to be with us.  See photos below and in this GOOGLE PHOTO ALBUM.  Parents may add photos there too!
