Week 27: Metro Theatre and Lent Begins

February 28, 2020
Xavier and Braden
Monday’s hot lunch was grilled ham and cheese. On Tuesday the 6th Grade boys had a basketball
game against CCLS. On Wednesday was a Lent church service. On thursday the girls basketball
team played Child Of God. Finally on Friday we had a field trip to see Metro Theatre preform
Ghost. That was our week.

LENT BEGINS
For it is by GRACE you have been saved through faith and this is not from yourselves it is a gift of God, not a result of works so that no one can boast.  Ephesians 2:8-9

Lent began this week with Ash Wednesday.  After our memory study of the Lord's prayer and how God cares for our every need, we now focus on Christ's amazing love for us -  that he would come to this earth and take our sins on the cross. During Lent I try to recommit myself to personal devotions and prayer.  This is a time to focus on Jesus and His great love for us.  Jesus gave His life so that I can live.

So instead of giving something up for Lent, I challenge my students to try doing the opposite and add something ... maybe commit to Wednesday night church, attend Sunday School, be a prayer partner with a classmate, do personal devotions, do family devotions, or make weekend worship a priority in your family.

I know your faith life will be strengthened.

Zion invites you to Lenten worship each Wednesday at 3:30 and 7:00. (Dinner served between services)

Quarter ends Friday - Please be sure if your student has been absent that they check in with each teacher.  AR tests may still be taken on Monday 3/2.

THANK YOU to the parade of parents who made it possible for us to attend the play.  WE LOVE YOU!!  Ask your child how they showed a track race on stage.

Monday's simulation of World Population growth

Our population topped 7 billion - most of the growth happening in the last century - what will that mean?

Week 26: Heart Challenge!!

February 21, 2020
Alyssa
This week we had Monday off due to President’s Day. We had two tests and a pep rally on Thursday.
The basketball players and the cheerleaders left on Friday to go to state.  We also had jump rope
for heart on Friday.

Mrs. R.'s Quick Reminders:
Friday, Feb. 28 is our play field trip to see Ghost Red Zion shirts and standardized dress bottoms.
We'll be back for lunch.

Monday, March 2 is the last day for AR tests this quarter.
Friday March 6 is Grandparents/Special Friends day. Thank you for getting those dismissal
forms to me by this Friday. March 6 also ends the 3rd quarter.

Wed - Friday March 4-6 will be Zion's Scholastic Book fair. See info below. Wednesday will
be our class shopping day.

What's Happening in 6th Grade
Here's a few topics we are exploring:
Religion -  Humiliation and Exaltation of Jesus!!  That's looking at Christ's nature as true God and true Man, how he fulfilled the Law perfectly to be our substitute in His death and in glory defeated the devil in His

 resurrection.
S.S. Our Asian studies move from looking at the IT industry that connects American businesses to India, to now exploring population issues.  Next week our class will simulate the rate of world population growth and we'll

now use China as a way to look at how countries meet the challenges of large and growing populations.  As demographers
we will use a lot of statistics, including 2019 country data from our Junior Scholastic World Almanacs.
Math - G-Math are in the heart of ratios and percents.   T-Math is getting into the meat of fraction operations.  Grocery

shopping for the best buy, looking at percent discounts, and cooking (doubling recipes) are great hands on ways to
 reinforce these concepts at home.
Lit. - Our nonfiction unit has included essays on African Americans in baseball and Jackie Robinson.  We took time to study a bit of the Civil Rights Movement as we explored informational articles.  I hope  you take the

opportunity to talk about important moments in history and how we are all equal in God's eyes.   After our Civil Rights video we watched Speak Life by contemporary Christian artist, Toby Mac.

We read a Lincoln biography now (Happy Birthday, Abe!!)  and are comparing the style of writing to an autobiography of author Beverly Cleary (The Ramona author is 103- thanks researcher, Braden, for this fact)

It’s a Jungle Out There!  Lions and Tigers and Books, OH MY!
Zion’s Annual Book Fair is coming up!    All proceeds will benefit the Zion School Library.  This year, our All For Books donations will assist the pre-school at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in St. Louis.

After great success last year, we will again be offering the Book Fair eWallet. Many parents don’t carry cash anymore, or have cash on hand when their child delivers the news… “Mom! Dad! It’s Book Fair day!”  The eWallet is a digital payment option offered through Scholastic that gives parents a safer alternative to sending their children to school with cash.  It’s easily funded using a credit card, but with the convenience of setting a spending limit. See the flyer in Friday Folders on how to set up your students’ eWallet by visiting: http://www.scholastic.com/bf/zionlutheranschool4

This must be done prior to their class’ visit to the book fair in order to be utilized.

Book Fair Hours

Wednesday, 3/4 (Class Visit Day/)   8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Thursday, 3/5 (PS/ K Grandparents Day)    8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This week we had a science lab. We learned how to draw special crosses
in art too. On Friday we had a Valentine’s party. We got candy and soda
floats. We also learned about jump rope for heart day. If you donate $5 you
can get a free sweats and hoodie day. Our class’s jump rope for heart day is
on Friday, February 21. We have a field trip to a play on February 28 and
there is Grandparent’s Day on March 6. We have no school on Monday, due
to Presidents Day! The boys and girls in 6th grade won the basketball
games on Thursday.  Enjoy your weekend!

From Mrs. R-
GOD GIVES US WORTH!
A special thank you to parents and grandparents for taking the time to be interviewed by your child this weekend.  You opened up a wonderful line of communication for your child to talk about these "growing up" years and the struggles we sometimes face with fitting in.  Thank you for your openness.  You are a great witness to share the importance of your relationship with God and the value He gives us as His children.

REMINDERS -

BOOK ORDERS - will be placed Saturday after noon if you still wish to order.  In March, the

Scholastic Book Fair will be here at Zion. Below is the link to volunteer:
