Week 6 WALKATHON!!

September 20, 2021 Quinn and Emily

This week was a fun week! On Friday we had a guest speaker come

and talk about electricity, He taught us some cool stuff about it! Then we have

our walkathon soon. We had a couple tests, we had social studies, math,

and more. This week missionary Greg Holtz told us about Cambodia and

what theyate and did. Make sure to bring chapel offerings for next week.

That's about all for this week.

From Mrs. R. -

Midquarter is upon us this coming Monday.  It’s amazing how well students have transitioned

into our school routine!   I am loving this class and the fun discussions coming in every subject.

“Making Friends” was our 2nd step topic as we practiced empathy and listening skills in giving

advice to kids struggling with making friends.  In Social Studies, we are discussing different

thematic maps and have had a great talk about regions in U.S. and Canada. We read a

character sketch of Mark Twain from his daughter's point of view.  Science saw more with

Electricity including a dynamic guest speaker from Cuivre River. And we couldn't have asked for a

more beautiful day for our Walkathon. May we truly be a blessing to Phil's Friends!

A Word about Math

Today you will see 3 Family Letters in the Friday folder.  These are found in the student work text to give parents a heads up of what we are or have been studying.  You do NOT need to go through the activities with your child.  Rather they are a chance to see the strategies we are using in class.

Part of the new math program is creating "productive struggle" as students try problems first, then we make connections and come to discover the strategy or skill that works best for success.  The struggle is making most students uncomfortable about math right now.  This is OK!!  On my end, I am locating the gaps that occur when changing texts and finding resources to fit.  I am helping them boost their skills to reach success.

The best way to support your child right now is to be encouraging.  Have them show you the math games in Ready Math.  Any review of facts is great!  Let me know if you have specific questions regarding your child.

Week 5: From the class bloggers

September 17, 2021 Quinn and Nathan

This week we had our first confirmation class for the people that are doing

it. (Zion church members) Make sure to start getting donations for the

walk-a-thon if you are planning on it. Trunk-or- treat is going to be coming up

soon on October, 15. Mr. Maddick had a very good chapel service this week

and we really enjoyed it. Make sure to bring your chapel offering for next week's

chapel. That is about it for this week.

From Mrs. R.

We have been busy with tests and quizzes! We have a LONG FIRST QUARTER.   If you have not been on Sycamore yet to check grades, think of doing that in the next week and help your child reflect on his or her progress.  (Please give teachers until the school day ends on Monday to update scores from this week .  Also please ask your child first about a particular grade before contacting me, as they likely have information about it. )

When Friday papers come home, encourage your child to pick the work they are most proud of and share with you why.   Also look for something which they might set a goal:  reading directions more carefully, studying vocabulary, asking questions in class, neater handwriting, taking an A.R. test.  Every child grows at a different pace and we can celebrate the learning that takes place each day!  Please don't hesitate to contact teachers with questions you may have.  Waiting until our Oct. 28 conference at the end of the quarter is not ideal if we can address a question sooner!

Other news

- WALKATHON NEXT FRIDAY 9/24- dress down day (spirit shirts, athletic bottoms). Plan to wear sunscreen!! Encourage your child to get those pledges - Donations due Oct. 1 We are sponsoring Phil's Friends. (Checks made to Zion) Students will be making the care packages as part of our Christmas service project.

- The Zion administration has asked teachers to start taking church attendance starting Monday, September 20th . We will ask your child each Monday morning. Some churches have Saturday night, Sunday morning, Monday night, and virtual services. These are all acceptable.

Week 4: Offerings for Cambodia

 > This year we are partnering with Greg Holz, a missionary, in Cambodia to provide meals for the 30 students in his village.  DCE Holz feeds the children 2 twice a day 5 days a week.  Our chapel offerings will purchase meals for the year. That 15,600 meals!

> These meals will coast $4, 680.  What a great way to share the love of Jesus to the children in Cambodia!  Watch for updates as we are SENT to help provide meals!

This week we had our very first math quiz.  We had the first intruder drill of

the year. We also have our first science and geography quiz today. Confirmation

classes start next week for people who are doing it. I think that's about it for this

 week thanks for tuning in.

WALKATHON Friday Sept 24

Our first JH Walkathon was held after Hurricane Katrina.  Now our students are joining

efforts for another great cause. We will be supporting the Phils' Friends collecting funds

to create care packages for cancer patients. Kids learned about our walkathon at the kickoff

assembly last Friday.  We "cancel" classes that afternoon and set the kids loose to run and

walk for the cause.  Students may begin raising pledges now and are encouraged to

self-pledge as well.  No money is due until after the walk.

having an earthquake drill today. For hot lunch today are hot dogs.

We had our first Geography quiz on Tuesday. On Monday we had

our first Star test of the year. The word of the week is hubris. More

from Caileigh and Nathan next week!

2ND STEP
Next week we will began the Second Step program. The program focuses on skills that will help your child succeed in school and in life. These skills include:

  • Empathy
  • Communication
  • Perspective taking
  • Respectful disagreement
  • Assertiveness
  • Emotional management
  • Problem solving

Book Orders

I use Scholastic Book orders.  Flyers came home today and I encourage you to place orders online if you like to purchase books.  Feel free to also use the flyers to see what new reads are out there and head to the local library!  Remember, not all books promoted by Scholastic may be appropriate for your child. I will place book orders SATURDAY, 9/11

REMINDERS:
1. Don't forget to remind your child to bring chapel offering each week.  We are sharing our blessings with children in Cambodia.

2. Make sure your kid is reading most days. AR is due October 18th and they need 16 points.  I have seen a couple of kids take quizzes already!

3. Help your child stay organized by teaching them to go through their binder at least once a week. I know a couple of them had Friday papers from last week which should stay at home for you to enjoy.  (We have a big recycle bin at our house ; )

 4. Have your child tell you about our Walkathon and Phil's Friends!  Look for information in those Friday papers.  I'll post more info next week.
