Week 16 Happy Thanksgiving! (11/30)

 Our STUCO led a wonderful chapel last week reminding us to give thanks for what we often take for granted.  We gathered car loads of food and STUCO delivered them to the seminary. We gave turkeys with all the fixings to families that stayed on campus for the holiday and stocked their food pantry!  Thank you for your generosity!

 God's blessings to you and your families this Thanksgiving time. I am so thankful for each one of your children in my class this year. What a blessing they are to me!  Thank you, parents, as well, for the support you give to your children and to me. I hope you enjoyed the holiday week with family and friends!

5th and 6th Grade Advent Services

The songs are learned, dramas getting polished, and practices winding down; 

preparations are nearly complete for our Advent Services on Wednesday.   It is time

 now for families to join in the preparation! The Advent season prepares us for the 

coming of Christ.  Please plan to join us for one of the services to hear the message

 of how God works in our hearts to prepare us for his coming.  Details about our 

worship services are below.  Blessings to your families this Advent season!

ADVENT WORSHIP:  WEDNESDAY, December 4, 

Times:  10:00 A.M. (chapel with Zion students) and 7:00 P.M.     

  Family and congregation members are welcome to attend either service.

Arrival for the evening services: between 6:30 - 6:40. 

• 6th graders meet in classrooms in JH 

• 5th graders meet in church basement  

 (Pre-service musicians should check in with their teacher at 6:30 and then proceed

 to the church)

Dress:  Students should dress nicely for both the morning service and the evening 

service. 

Morning – standardized school dress (or costume)

Evening – standardized school dress or “Sunday best” -  avoid jeans and 

      clothing with writing (unless costume)

After the evening service:  Parents may pick up students from the Welcome Center 

in church.

** Reminder: As students are leading worship, please refrain from photography during

 the service.  We would be happy to stage pictures after the worship service ends. 

6R FIELD TRIP to BREEZE PARK

Our class will spread some Christmas cheer to the residents at Breeze Park Lutheran Senior Center on Thursday, Dec. 12. I am looking for a few parent drivers to join us from 1:00-2:45 p.m as we sing Christmas carols and enjoy visiting with residents. Watch for permission slips to come home on Monday.

Week 15: Strings play for Veterans (11/17)

What's Happening in 6th grade  

 Here are a few of our current units:

 Religion - We have begun our study of the New Testament with a look at the time between the testaments and Jesus' birth.  This parallels our Advent preparations as we to get ready for the coming of Christ!

T Math - 3 D shapes and nets, surface area

G Math - writing expressions and order of operations 

Social Studies - wrapping up our N. America unit. We completed postcards from amazing physical features that God has blessed us with to enjoy His creation!

  Art - construction began on nativities.  Students can take home the peg people figures to add creative touches, but most or all of the nativity will be constructed at school.   Jr. High Christmas Art Display will be in the church basement on Dec. 12.  Pop in before or after pickup that day.

Week 14 Field Trip Fun (11/11)

This week on Monday we did capture the flag in the gym because Lisa read 500,000 words

 in AR! On Wednesday we had chapel, BRING YOUR OFFERING! Thursday we had

 a quiz in english and in G math they finished their test, we also started cup stacking in 

P.E. Finally on Friday we had our field trip to Weldon Springs nuclear site, and we went

 bowling after lunch.

Thanks to the parents who helped make our field trip possible.  I can't wait to hear how it all went! Here are a few snapshots Mrs. Lee took.  Here is a  Google photo album for sharing pictures.

I appreciate all of your prayers for my father.  The surgery went very smoothly and he was able to return home the next day.  It was good to be able to stay with him the first few days to help him adjust.

When illness hits!

It's that time of year!   It's no fun being sick and especially no fun trying to do school from home. 

* Please email me and Mrs. Holtz if your child is ill and indicate whether you are able to pick up HW

*Books and materials are available at 3:00 in the school office foyer

*The Daily Assignment Sheet is where to find assignments  (link above and in GC- homeroom).  Note tabs at the bottom for the correct week and look for links to lesson slides, etc

 

If a child is sick multiple days,  I encourage them to work one day at a time (vertically) down the assignment doc to stay organized and complete one day's work at a time.  Not all assignments are digital, so not all are not posted on an individual student's Google Classroom homepage.  Remind your child to email teachers questions.    Here is more from our Family Handbook:

In general, when students return they should have prepared as a minimum the lessons due the first day of their absence. All lessons should be made up within the same number of school days as were missed, up to three school days. In special circumstances a parent may request a teacher or administrator to consider an extension. Prior to a planned absence, a parent may request advance assignments with the understanding that these assignments may not yet be available. Assignments that have been provided in advance are due on the day the student returns; otherwise the assignment is subject to late-work penalties.

Week 13 Win At Social

 We had our first experiences with "Win at Social" discussions.  Thursday, we tackled Striking a Balance with Technology.  

 

Now it's your turn to "Family Huddle"   I encourage you to use one or more of the following discussion questions around the dinner table this weekend.

1. TOSS UP: If your family had a 'Tech-Free Zone' in the house, where would you want it to be, and why? Go around the room and have everyone share ideas!
   
2. COACH UP: I heard you talked about how even adults can get distracted by tech. Have you ever felt like I was distracted by my device? Can you share some tips with me on how I can strike a balance better?
3. HUDDLE UP: I heard you had the choice to create your own Family Standards Agreement to help our family balance our tech use. Let’s work together as a family to make our own Family Social Standards Agreement. We can check out the website link fixed, customize it together, and have everyone in the family sign it to show that we’re committed to these standards!

What a blessing it is to have technology! But like all things, God calls us to be good stewards - of our time, are minds,  and our devices.  If the "screen" is hurting our relationships, we may need to make some changes.

This week we had a four day week. During these four days we had our Harvest

 Party on Thursday because Friday we had off. We also had Advent practice

 Monday and Tuesday. We did volleyball in the gym this week Monday and 

Thursday 

Reminders:

No School Friday Nov. 1 - Teacher in-service day

Instrumental auditions for Advent are Thursday, Nov. 7  Remind your child that they should be practiced and bring their music/instrument that day. 

Field Trip Friday Nov. 8 - Weldon Spring Int. Center/Harvest Lanes

        *Cold lunch

        *Dress for the weather:  Red Zion jacket/jeans with jacket or hoodie, walking shoes

        *Water bottle for the afternoon

        *Optional: binoculars for our disposal cell hike.  Please label and teachers will                    keep in a box until our hike.

I hope talks about our Literature novel have popped up in your family conversations.  Students have been reading the novel, Among the Hidden by Margaret Petersen Haddix, and I have to put a STOP sign in the novels to get them to put it down.  Through the novel we discuss literary elements like characterization and conflict, but also propaganda, morals, and faith.
