Week 21: 2nd step and news

From Mrs. R:

* Thanks to so many Dads and special guests for taking time out of your day Wednesday to share a donut with us.  Special memories!
Book orders will be placed Saturday afternoon if you still wish to order
Permission slips for Hidden Valley  are due by Friday
*  Did you sign up for 7th grade?  Enrollment opens to the public next week.  Details are on Sycamore.
*NLSW (National Lutheran Schools Week) celebrates the uniqueness that we have to share the love of Jesus in our schools.  Our class voted for a CASUAL DAY on Monday 1/27.  Scroll down to see the other dress days.  Think of what you would wear on a Saturday.  (Girls have been told that leggings are only appropriate if under skirts/tunic style sweatshirt/etc)

2nd Step
The lessons last week and yesterday in 2nd step have focused on Respectful Disagreement.  We watched videos on siblings arguing over chores - disrepectfully, then respectfully (after Dad said they had to work it out and get the chores done!)  The students then had a chance to role play and "coach" each other in these skills.

*Keep calm
*Use active listening  (eye contact, nodding, repeat idea back)
*Consider the other's perspective
*Explain your perspective clearly
*Act nonjudgmentally

One of the best things to remember when disagreements escalate:  In the light of God's love, we can go back and apologize for not being respectful and forgive one another when we fail (which we will!) Maybe a few good tips for us adults too!

Have you heard of GRIT?

We want our children to be able to push through when life gets tough. Resilience or grit is a buzz word
in today's culture. Here are a few tips from Love and Logic: (sorry it's a little blurry)
