Week 5

From the Class Blogger:

Hi this is Quentin. This week has been great with band, choir, and music class. Friday we started second step which works with our social skills and school success. That was great! We did lots of fun things and discovered new things. I look forward to next week.

From Mrs. R:

Dear Families:

Our 6th graders got a start today with a new twist to Religion class.  As a result of Zion's Accreditation study, we are starting a new program called Second Step: Student Success Through Prevention throughout our school. The program’s goals are to help students by intentionally teaching social skills with the goals to increase social, emotional, and school success.  The program also seeks to decrease aggression, violence, bullying, and substance abuse.  Today's topic introduced the changes in Middle School and the concept of empathy.

These life skills are critical for the future of all our students. Families will be encouraged to get involved in the program through teacher communication of our lessons and your child's discussion of class activities.  As we accept one another as fellow Christians - ALL FOR ONE, we recognize that we also struggle with our sinful nature.  We believe this program will help us make Zion a more caring, respectful place to learn and grow in our faith.  We hope to provide our students with essential skills for now and the future.  We meet together with the 2 classes, and will meet every 2-3 weeks for a lesson.

A Note from Mrs. Dersch:

This week in English we are focusing on complete subjects and predicates, as well as simple subjects and predicates. Students will write an advertisement for a music show/band or a press release on a new invention/scientific discovery.

We had our third spelling test and third unit packet due. If a student does not turn in their packet on time, they need to fill out a purple junior high late slip, and take the test the next Friday. They will not receive a late grade on their test.

We will have a short quiz over half of the Unit 1 lessons next week, most likely on Wednesday. Students can use their salmon colored “flippy charts” for words and terms.

God’s blessings for a wonderful week, and please do not hesitate to contact me with questions: rdersch@zionharvester.org

Camp Wartburg/High-Ropes Course:
Zion S.T.U.C.O (Student Council) is sponsoring a day of FUN and SERVICE at Camp Wartburg in Waterloo, Illinois, on Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 9am to 4pm (leave Zion at 8am and arrive back to Zion at 5pm).  We will be participating in the High Ropes Course (possibly the Rock Climbing Wall and Repelling Tower).  We will also participate in a service project to help out Camp Wartburg and thank them for letting us participate in their camp activities.  The cost for this event is $25/student.  In order to reserve a spot for yourself, you will need the following turned in to Mrs. Cluck by September 16.

  1. Permission slip signed by your parent/legal guardian
  2. Camp Wartburg medical statement form signed by a parent/legal guardian.
  3. $25 cash or check made out to Zion Lutheran School

Class Photographer: Lucas

We started our class photographer job with a little training on the camera during our Homeroom time with a few shots around the room.  We hope to get the photographers taking the camera around a little more during the week so you get a few peeks into the life of our sixth graders.
